It wasn't too bad but MIL is who she is, and who she is can be very annoying. She is a very superficial person, mostly concerned with looks and setting a pretty table. I got a gift card for Christmas and wanted very badly to buy myself some beautiful wine glasses, she had a very hard time on the shopping outing, not getting to be in charge of selecting the glasses. In a discussion about politics, candidates, the election, the new administration, her comment about Hillary Clinton was, "Well, she certainly is a pretty woman." Typical MIL. She asked Kayleigh more than once what her weight is, and told stories about being on a diet as a teen. Kayleigh doesn't focus on her weight, we do not own a scale, she is weighed once a year at her physical and does not think about her weight. She says that MIL has asked her more than once on the phone about her weight and she does not want to tell her - she also said that she doesn't understand how MIL can keep asking about her weight but never asks her about her grades. Kayleigh was horrified when MIL said goodbye to her - her parting words were, "I'm so proud of you. You're such a pretty girl." She couldn't believe that this is the only thing MIL can find to be proud of and that MIL thinks this is what would make Kayleigh happy. Thank goodness they live far away

Thanks for letting me vent.

DYK hard to imagine MIL as ur DH was growing up....what is FIL like does he ignore her most of the time? Like u said its tolerable only cuz u know its a visit once a yr & only temporary but such an overbearing (she sounds like a control freak to boot) person would make it hard for me to hold my tongue. Suffice to say there would be a lot of hurt feelings, all hers, if she came to visit me ;-)

Big hugs to you & Kayleigh....also Ian & condolences to DH ;-)

Yep, MIL is definitely someone who likes to control what others do, thinks she is better than everyone else and very judgemental.
