This is Hannah's list. She's in the 8th grade/I know last year she brought her cell phone and her Ipod to school.

cell phones, iPods, CD Players, MP3 Players, Walkman, radios, electronic games, laser pointers, lighters, matches, tobacco products, fireworks, or any other items deemed inappropriate by administrators. Thee items will be confiscated and retuned to the parents on the first offense.

No trench coats, sagging pants, short skirts/shorts, or chains. Trench coats are not permitted. While baggy pants are OK, the sagging look is not acceptable. "Short skirts", dresses, or shorts are also not aceptable. Tank tops must have straps wider than 2 inches and no "tummy" may be exposed. Any student found wearing inappropriate clothing will be asked to contact his/her parents and return home to change.

No bags in classroom Bags brought to school (such as backpacks, equipment bags, and duffel bags) will not be permitted in classrooms. Bags may be brought to school but must be stored in the student's assigned locker before first period starts and taken home at the end of the day.

I have a problem with "no cell phones". I don't have a problem with cell phones must be OFF during the day, but this year Kristen will be taking the public bus from school to my office on Wednesday's for riding lessons. I NEED her to have her phone with

I would fight on the cell phone issue. I refuse to allow my son to attend any afterschool activity without a means to contact me or me him. Especailly where he walks home from school. Makes me nervous to not be able to contact him if I'm running late or if I need for him wait for me to pick him up due to poor winter weather.

I would give the school an option. Allow him to have the cell phone on his person or provide him with an alternative education because I won't allow him to be in school without one.

That looks very similar to Jordyn's list of items. With regard to backpacks, we were told at the beginning of last year that backpacks in the classroom were prohibited, so she carried 4 periods worth of books around for most of the school year because she couldn't get to her locker in between some of them. Near the end of school she got a bag and said apparently that they were letting them take bags to classes, like those 8"x15" polka dotted totes that are popular now, but they just couldn't take backpacks. I wish they'd make up their minds, I don't see how bags like that are any safer than backpacks, if that's what they are worried about. They aren't allowed cell phones either, but Jordyn takes hers, leaves it off in her backpack in her locker all day, and then calls me at the end of the school day when her carpool picks her up.

What about purses Caroline? I know in a lot of school districts around our area they are also banning purses in the classroom, which I am not entirely opposed to, but it brings up a point especially once a girl hits puberty how they are supposed to be discreet about those types of things.

I don't think I need to fight the issue. Hannah had her iPod and her cell phone at school last year. The kids just aren't supposed to turn them on between certain hours. That's what the rules say. :)

The list sounds pretty simliar to ours.Gabby is only going to be in 6th grade,so I don't have her carry a cell. Our school handbook actually states that they can no even have cell phones on the buses or at any school related activity. There is no way that once Gab starts taking an activity bus that she won't carry a cell,or even if she is at a school football game. Most of the older kids just hide the cell phones and the ipods in their backpacks.I don't let her bring her ipod, even though the bus driver is ok with it,I just don't want it stolen.Last year they did tekl the kids that if they got caught with these items they could keep them and not even return them to the parents.gab did say that they did search 8th grade lockers last year and they smashed several cell phones looking for drugs. The dress code is pretty simliar, although if they wear leggings the skirt can be as short as they want. The vp did try and ban purses, but since girls sometimes have to carry personal stuff that really did not cut it.I have no problem with the phone staying in the locker all day,my problem is with not being able to have it at school events. In any case the inside of Gab's school gets no recepition anyway/Laura and Gabby

Our school does not allow cell phones, iPods, CD Players, or any other electronic devices. No tobacco products, fireworks, knives, explosives or guns/airguns/bb guns.

Clothing must not advertise, promote or encourage the use of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, sex or violence, nor have markings or language that is offensive, obscene, suggestive, or promote disruptive or illegal activity. Clothing that is "gang like" is unacceptable: beanies, marked baseball caps, sagging pants, chains, bandanas, hiked up pant legs, or other gang related items. Only two red or two blue items of clothing may be worn at one time. No tank tops, halters, crop tops, spaghetti straps or garments that reveal underwear, cleavage, or stomachs. And no revealing shirts or shorts.

My kids had their cell phones with them all last year (and will do so this year), along with probably 98% of the rest of the students there. It's a silly rule not allowing cell phones, they should just say cell phones must be turned off and put away during school hours.

I don't have the list in front of me, but this is what I can remember:

No ipods, no handheld games, no extra baggy clothing, no backpacks in the classroom, no wild makeup/black lipstick, no haircolor other than one found in nature (SERIOUSLY!), no short skirts, no holes in pants above fingertip, no skulls (my DD HATES that rule!), shirts must cover all of shoulder, no bellies showing, no trenchcoats, no clothing that advertises alcohol/tobacco/drugs, no offensive writing on clothing. That's all I can remember. Cell phones are okay, but must be off all day.

Melanie

PS I'd be in trouble with the no wild makeup and crazy colored hair rule! I was a bit on the goth side in HS - LOL!

I WISH they enforced rules here...remember the facial piercings I was ranting about last year?

They basically told the kids that if they have anything electronic stolen, don't even bother filing a report...Thats all they gave em.
