how is was for your child by answering the following questions! If you have more than one child, feel free to answer for them all!

1. What grade/grades are your kids finishing up?

2. On a scale of one to ten, one being the lowest and ten the highest, how do you rate the school year?

3. What were the highs of the year for your child?(win any awards, learn to do something like tie shoes or ride a bike, perform in a recital, etc.)

4. Did your child have any lows this year? What were they?

5. How did your child mature this year?

6. What will they be doing this summer??

Kiddo is finishing 5th grade, 4th year of violin, 2nd year of German.

This schoolyear rates about a 4/5, have been worse, could be a lot better.

No highs at school that I can think of, but no real downers either.

She is beginning to mature in scary ways, as in pre-teendom. She showers voluntarily, combs her hair and tries to make hairdos. As far as school, she has matured in the sense that she is more able to stoically just put up with it, instead of complaining and crying all the time.

We will go see grandma and then her cousins are coming from the States. So we will just be hanging this summer, I think.

Sam and Rachel are finishing 5th grade.

I'd rate their years an 8. It's been a pretty smooth transition to middle school, but definitely ups and downs both socially (for S&R) and academically (more R than S). 3/4 of their teachers were very good, not great, and one was a little weak, but OK. Their elementary school is the only one in our district that is "split" between the 2 middle schools. Both of their "best friends", and almost all of Sam's friends, went to the other middle school.

3. What were the highs of the year for your child?(win any awards, learn to do something like tie shoes or ride a bike, perform in a recital, etc.)

Sam won the "gold" award for all of his report cards so far. He performed in 2 band concerts. I think his writing skills have improved tremendously this year. He really enjoys the teacher he has for science and reading. (Interesting, because R has him for science and isn't so crazy about him.)

Rachel's highs would probably be how well she did in basketball this past season. She also was proud of herself when she raised her science grade 12 points 2nd quarter. She has worked very hard to maintain and raise her grades. She has made several new groups of friends.

They've both learned to sew with a sewing machine and type!

4. Did your child have any lows this year? What were they?

Rachel has had a few really bad test scores that she's had to work very hard to recover from. She seems to have trouble being consistent on tests. (I have to add that she's really doing just fine! She's in above-level math and reading, it just doesn't come as easily to her, and her twin brother gets the gold award every report card. She seems to have trouble with memorization. And why are they memorizing so much in 5th grade anyway? Ooops -that would be a different post ;-) She's also not crazy about a couple of her teachers. I think they're reasonably good teachers, just not the best match for her - a little too high pressure.

Sam was struggling to find new friends, always tough for him, so being in a new school wasn't easy. But, he seems to be finally settling in with that.

5. How did your child mature this year?

They just seem to be growing up in general! I'm proud of how responsible they are for their own school work. They display very good sense about who they choose as friends, and recognize snobbiness and meanness for what it is.

6. What will they be doing this summer??

Rachel is going to day camp for 8 weeks. Sam is going to day camp for 6 weeks, and then, for the first time, to sleep over camp for 2 weeks. He's very excited about it, and doesn't know anyone else going, so I'm glad he's doesn't seem at all nervous. I'll let you know as we get closer! This will be their 6th summer at the day camp they are attending.

When not at camp, they'll be playing with friends/neighbors, going to the pool, the library, the ice cream and water ice shops ;-), and I'm sure watching way too much TV even with all the activity!

We'll also be taking a family vacation to CA, and will visit my parents, probably twice, in NY. We'll go to the beach a couple of times from my parent's house during our August visit.

Their birthday is in late June after school lets out, but we haven't made definite plans for it yet.

1. What grade/grades are your kids finishing up? TYLER IS FINISHING UP FIRST GRADE AND BROOKE IS FINISHING FIFTH(where does time go? I can't believe my baby girl will be in middle school next year!!)

2. On a scale of one to ten, one being the lowest and ten the highest, how do you rate the school year?

TYLER'S YEAR HAS BEEN ABOUT AN 8. HIS TEACHER IS NICE, BUT VERY MOODY. HER GRADING OF PAPERS SEEMS TO DEPEND ON HER MOOD. LAST NIGHT HE BROUGHT HOME A PAPER WHERE HE GOT EVERY SINGLE THING CORRECT, BUT SHE GAVE HIM A C.

BROOKE'S YEAR HAS BEEN A SOLID 10. SHE HAS A WONDERFUL TEACHER WHO SHE JUST LOVES AND AFTER THE DISASTER THAT 4TH GRADE WAS, IT'S BEEN WONDERFUL TO SEE HER ENJOYING SCHOOL AGAIN.

3. What were the highs of the year for your child?(win any awards, learn to do something like tie shoes or ride a bike, perform in a recital, etc.)

TYLER- HE WON SEVERAL ART RIBBONS FOR SPECIAL ART CHALLENGES THIS YEAR. HE'S BEEN ON THE A HONOR ROLL ALL YEAR, LEARNED TO SHOOT A BB GUN, GOT A CAUGHT BEING GOOD CARD EVERY SINGLE MONTH THE YEAR, WAS STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR HIS CLASS

BROOKE- WON RIBBONS FOR ART CHALLENGES, WON A RIBBON FOR HER ARTWORK AT THE SCHOOL ART SHOW, BEEN ON THE A HONOR ROLL ALL YEAR, WAS STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR HER CLASS, CAUGHT BEING GOOD CARDS EVERY MONTH THIS YEAR, WON MOST OUTSTANDING BATON STUDENT OF THE YEAR, PERFORMED AT HER RECITAL AND THE SCHOOL TALENT SHOW.

4. Did your child have any lows this year? What were they?

TYLER - I CAN'T REALLY THINK OF ANY FOR HIM EXCEPT THAT HE IS SOOOOO READY FOR SCHOOL TO BE OUT THAT HE'S BEING A BIT OF PROBLEM EVERY MORNING NOW LOL.

BROOKE - GOT SEPARATED FROM HER FRIENDS THIS YEAR AND FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY THAT THEY WEREN'T REALLY FRIENDS AFTER ALL. SHE'S BEEN LEARNING A REAL LESSON ON HOW FICKLE GIRLS ARE AND HOW CRUEL THEY CAN BE. THEY DECIDED THAT JUST BECAUSE SHE WASN'T IN THEIR CLASS THIS YEAR, SHE COULDN'T BE THEIR FRIEND ANYMORE. BUT SHE IS TAKING IT IN STRIDE AND MAKING WONDERFUL NEW FRIENDS.

5. How did your child mature this year?

TYLER- HE'S LEARNING TO BE MORE PATIENT AND NOT GET SO EASILY FRUSTRATED

BROOKE- MY BABY GIRL IS REALLY GROWING UP! SHE IS MATURING PHYSICALLY AND IS JUST SO BEAUTIFUL. SHE IS ALSO WAY MORE MATURE EMOTIONALLY AND MENTALLY THAN MOST OF THE GIRLS SEEM TO BE.(can I take credit for that??? ROFL)

6. What will they be doing this summer?? LOTS OF CAMPING AS A FAMILY! WE WILL ALSO BE MAKING SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE PUBLIC LIBRARY, VISITING MY GRANDMA, DOING CRAFTS, WATCHING TV AND GOING TO THE POOL!
