Do you have an Australian Shepherd? I volunteer for Aussie rescue. I volunteered to foster an Aussie and ended up keeping him - not sure I want to try that again LOL. I had a little (30 lb) Black bi female for almost 16 years. She was so responsible I am pretty sure that she thought she was a better parent than I, and at times she may have been right. My foster/new aussie is a 90 lb blue merle male. He is so different than our other Aussie and so wonderful.

Tell me about your dog(s?).

I am so sorry to hear about Maisy. It was tough enough to put down an almost 16 year old dog. I can't imagine having to part with a 3 yo. Buzz, our 90 lb blue merle, is very laid back as well. I don't know why someone gave him up. He is just the most wonderful dog - a big teddy bear. I live in the Philadelphia burbs so I work with the rescue group around here. ARPH (Aussie Rescue and Placement Helpline) is a national organization though so it is very possible that some of the people I work with know your friend if she works with ARPH.

I see that we have something else in common - we are both band parents. My son has been in band for several years, but this year he starts high school and he is in the marching band for the first time. It is very demanding, but so far my son loves it. They practiced 8 hours a day for the 3 weeks before school started and had their first performance last Friday. I was really impressed. When school starts they have practice every day after school for 2.5 hours and performances and competitions every weekend. Then in the spring they go to Hong Kong for 10 days (missing 6 days of school). I am so nervous about how all of this will impact ds's school work, but he is so happy it has to be a good thing. School starts tomorrow - keep your fingers crossed.

I just posted so that this thread would go back to the top because I am not sure you saw my response.

My son wasn't that into band in middle school either, so I was kind of surprised when he wanted to join marching band. Marching band is a big deal in our high school. The joke of the district is that people go to the football games to see the band. It is a huge commitment for all of us, but he is very willing to do his part so I am happy to do mine. Like you said, I want him to be involved in something, and marching band is a good thing to be involved in.

As for the Hong Kong trip, I am not going. I am beginning to get nervous about that, but I have an 8 year old, and when I had to make the decision I thought that I didn't want to leave her for 10 days. Now I am starting to reconsider, but it is too late. They have already chosen the chaperones. I am sure my son will be fine, but I think he would have liked me to be there. Of course he didn't tell me that until it is too late.
