A later bedtime this yr????............m

Zachary will be catching the bus at 7:30 a.m. this yr instead of at 7:00 a.m. with his brother. The middle school starts at 8:10 a.m. and lets out at 3:30 p.m. so I was wondering about pushing Zachary`s bed time back to 9:30 p.m. since he will be getting up later than his brother. What do you think??? I also am wondering how I am going to get Timothy to go to bed at the usual time of 9:00 p.m. without feeling punished. If you have kids that go to bed at different times I would love your advice on this. When Zachary and Timothy went to the same school they went to bed at the same time but now with Zachary getting older I am just wondering if it is not time to change things a little for him as long as he continues to get up and get ready on time. TIA for your response.

We've always had two separate bedtimes, due to the fact that my sons are 8 years apart in age. Sean was going to bed at 8:30p and then asked if he could stay up until 9p. He's difficult to wake in the mornings so I was skeptical. I made a deal with him, he had to get up on his own with only one "it's time to wake up" annoucement for a couple weeks. If he could do it, then I'd extend his bedtime by ½ hour - but if I had trouble waking him more than once or twice it was back to the 8:30 bedtime. He kept it up and does fine now.

Scott's too young (2½) to care about the discrepancy right now but I'm sure I'll be having the "because he's older" discussion sooner rather than later LOL.

Best Always,

Actually I've been thinking about this too. DS has always required much less sleep than DD. I remember that I was allowed to stay up until 9:30 once I got into 4th grade. My kids have always went to bed at 8 then read until 9 then lights out. I'm thinking that now that he's going to be in 6th grade, I'll let him stay up a bit later. If she complains, I'm planning to tell her that when she can get up on time without me practically having to drag her out of bed, then she can stay up a bit later. I know that's not going to happen anytime soon so shouldn't be a problem. If I had a lot of trouble with her last year, I'd make her go to bed 1/2 hour earlier anyway and she was fine with it.

I think I would just explain to the younger one that since his brother is older he gets to stay up later and when he's older he can too.

Do they share a bedroom? If not then maybe they can go to bed at the same time but your oldest could stay up that extra half hour to read or do something quiet.

My youngest got to stay up later last year, he was in afternoon kg so he didn't have to get up until he wanted to. This year, they are all going to bed at the same time. My oldest does get to stay up on occasion but it's not often because if any one of my kids needed sleep, it's him. I usually tell the other two that he's older and can stay up a little longer if they complain. I told the other two last year that their younger brother didn't have to wake up the same time and could sleep longer, that was why he didn't go to bed when they did.

It's going to be hard this year because my oldest will be in 6th grade and I know his friends all get to stay up after 9 and we send them to bed at 8-8:30. He tried last year but I really think he needs sleep.

Personally though, I like them all down at the same time.
