Learned a safety lesson this morning...

ALWAYS wear safety glasses when dealing with (fixing, etc.) glass and wear shoes in the house. Everyone is fine, thank goodness! Dh was in the bathroom standing in the tub fixing our sliding glass shower door (replacing the rollers on top) and it literally exploded in his hands. He was not twisting it , pushing on it, or otherwise putting pressure on it, just holding it. It didn't slip or fall or anything. It's about 20 years old so I'm sure fatigue was a factor. There was glass all over the bathtub (the same kind of small chunks that a car window breaks into) and all over the floor in the rest of the bathroom. Dh ended up with cuts on his hands and sand size grains of glass on his face. Fortunately, nothing got in his eye! I was sitting on the toilet keeping him company and holding screws, etc. in my pjs wearing no shoes or slippers. We called to Evan and he brought me my shoes and the broom and dustpan. We swept up what we could and dh used the shop vac to get up the rest of it. He even had to shop vac the drain because there was no cover on it at the time.
Guess we're out looking for new doors for the shower this afternoon. :( Definitely NOT in the budget at the moment. We'll have to use the $ I just paid into the line of credit to take care of it :P I was hoping to leave that money there to cover bills later in the month if dh doesn't get paid (AGAIN)!

I'm so glad neither of you were injured.
What about (temporarily) getting a rod & shower curtain?--it would be way cheaper than new doors.
It would depend on the make of your shower, though...is there enough of a lip from the bottom?
Thanks! The shower rod and curtain is a terrific idea! It's a tub so a shower curtain would work very well. I'm thinking that's the way to go. I'm hoping I can find a large enough tension rod so nothing permanent has to be screwed in to the fake marble on the walls.
Things have definitely been "roll with the punches" style around here lately. :)
Wal-mart has a great selection of tension rods. Make sure you measure the width of your tub before you go.
And you may want to pay a little more for a microban shower curtain. Regular shower curtains are about $3, microban about $9 but last more than 3 times longer before they start getting moldy/mildewy, which you don't want in your house anyway.
and don't forget the shower curtain hangers.
