Lying

Ok, luckily I have a pretty laid back easy going 11 year old boy (his younger sister is another story) He's pretty respectful, yeah he does "talk back" sometimes, not a snotty way, just for the sake of trying to get out of doing something he doesnt want to do.

So the other day I caught him in a lie. I was seriously surprised he lied to me, he just hasnt ever been that type of kid. It had to do with homework and school and he was worried I was going to be mad about a couple test grades. I am usually laid back about that stuff as long as he TRIES. I just dont know what to do, I HATE lying, my daughter lies about stuff a lot which makes me nuts.

So, does anyone else experience this with their kids? I kinda thought if he wasnt a liar when he was younger ( I mean if you asked him if he did something wrong, hed confess)

I think everyone lies to some extent, kids included. Its usually to avoid getting into trouble or perceived trouble. If it happens once in a while for something minor I would just reinforce that he wouldn't have been in trouble and that telling the truth is always superior. Kids try to please us most of the time and he knew you appreciate good grades so assumed that bad grades would receive an opposite reaction. He may have badly misjudged you, but that's why he's a kid, his judgement is still off kilter. So again, reinforce the importance of telling the truth but don't make a federal case out of this one time. Keep an eye open though for a pattern.

Lying is very normal at this age--why do they do it--good question--who knows!
