As if the stuff going on with my extended family isn't enough (details in the dyk thread) Evan came home in TEARS today! You would not believe everything the poor kid went through at school today!
He rode his bike to school today so he could hang out with some friends while they waited for the doors to open. While he's waiting one of his friend's little brother's (a kindergartener) comes charging at him. His friend tried to hold him back but he wiggled loose. The kid has done this before and while it irritates Evan, it's never been a big deal. Well, today it became one. The kid reached up and tried to put Evan in a headlock. Evan knew he was older, made the right choice and didn't retaliate (something we've been working on alot). Some of the other 4th graders around (let's call them W and C) thought it was funny that Evan was getting beaten by a kindergartener and started to kick Evan in the shins. At this point a teacher broke up the scuffle. The two kids that were kicking him made comments about him getting "schooled" by a kindergartener and someone else made comments about him being a wimp. What these kids don't know is that Evan knows a martial art and could have kicked their butts around the playground and back! So he makes the right choice and ends up getting humiliated.
Later on in the day, two kids (W and another boy) are shooting uncapped markers at a paper target like darts and Evan tells the teacher. The teacher calls W up and asks if it's true. W says he was just drawing dots on the target. BTW - W lies like a rug...
Fast forward to after school. Evan goes to the bike rack (which is around the side of the school and unsupervised) and W is there. W pulls Evan's backpack off his back and throws it to the ground. He then grabs Evan's bike lock and throws it into a pile of sand. After this he looks at Evan and says, "It's after school, now you can't tell on me." At some point during this, Evan taps W on the hand with the lock. He said he really wanted to hit him hard with it but thought better of it. When I asked Evan what W's reaction to the tap was he told me he just walked away. This tells me W was not hurt in the least. So for the second time in one school day (what is that 6 hours?) Evan makes the right choice and ends up humiliated...
By the time he got home he was in tears and saying he didn't want to go to family night at church and didn't want to go to school tomorrow. Can ya blame the poor kid? I'd want to crawl into a hole too.
After I had a chance to digest all of this and settle down, I left the principal a voicemail detailing everything. I was thinking I would get a call at some point tomorrow. She called me at about 6:15 tonight and said she would have all the boys in her office tomorrow and get to the bottom of this. She also told me that she heard from Evan's teacher that his behavior (which has been an issue since January) has been really good for the past two weeks. Yeah Evan!!! The poor kid is trying sooooo hard to be good and do the right thing and he ends up humiliated twice in one day.
The worst part of all of this is this whole thing totally overshadowed what should have been a day of pride and excitement for him. He found out today that he got the male lead (dialog no singing) in the 4th grade music show. He worked really hard to learn the lines and has had issues with the music teacher for the past two years. The fact that she gave him the part shows me he's earned back her trust and she's willing to give him some responsibility. Again, yeah Evan!!!
I'm sad that these two bullies took the pride and joy that he should have had today away from him. I'm angry that these kids did this to my son. I'm very proud of Evan for making good choices and getting the part in the show!
AAAAACCCCKKK! What a day!

Wow, poor guy! Just keep reminding him that the more he tries to do the right thing, the more others will try to bring him down to THEIR level because they're jealous of the good he's bringing upon himself! See, his efforts got him the lead in the play AND the positive notice of the principal!
