New here, wanted to say hi and ask a ?

HI everyone, Just wanted to say hi. I have a 12 year old girl that started 6th grade this year and the transition has been not the easiest. It is defiently better now at the end of the year, My question is about all the slang they use. They use words that they don't even know what the meaning is, sometimes it is funny, but I really don't want her to use those words. I don't want to come across as a controlling mom, because I know she will go out and do it anyway. Her response always is, "times are different now than when you were in school mom". When really we had all of the same issues. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've taught my kids from day 1 that the language they use and the words that come out of their mouths are important and meaningful, so choose carefully.
I agree with Nancy. I know my DD might use different language with her friends, kids do try out different things, but in my home and in public with me you will talk appropriately. Words can hurt and are powerful. Bullies use them all the time.
If she is using a word you don't know, go to www.urbandictionary.com. You name, it you'll find it there. And in my opinion, if it is a vulgar word or one that I deem inappropriate she will be told to stop using it (at least in my presence, I can't control her otherwise). And don't take that "Its a different era" story. Get over yourself honey, I was 12 once too and even if I was born fully adult like Athena from her father's thigh, I am the parent and the adult and you will behave as I see fit. LOL
Welcome to our board. You'll find lots of super ladies here.

I agree, some of the ways they talk lately really make you have to sit and think---is this just normal tween/teen slang talk or something I need to stop!
I am a pretty relaxed mom so my DD probably is able to say a lot more than at some houses---not in terms of curse words, but slang type words!
