Welcome Jeannie. They aren't stupid questions. We all hit a new development at some point and its unknown and scary sometimes. I think she is starting to reach the age where they pull away from us. Its a natural development. Friends and outside interests start to be more interesting and more important than time with Mom.

I agree with your idea of spending one-on-one time. Ask her what she'd like to do. Go and play mini-golf and just yack. Ask her about her favorite music groups and why. Talk about her friends, school, you name it. What is she interested in? Animals? Books? Fashion? You will find it all flows back. They may seem like they don't want us or need us but they do. It can even just be going to a movie or sitting at home when the little ones are asleep and watching a video and eating popcorn. Let her choose the movie so you can see what kind of things she likes (age appropriate of course).

Hang around the board and read some of the threads and you might get some ideas. Its a wonderful group of ladies and don't be afraid to ask questions. Its how we learn and we're all in the preteen/teen boat together. :-)

By the way I'm Tam and my DD is just 12 and we live in Canada.

Jeannie-
Welcome to the board. You will find some great advice here. Hope to talk to you soon.

If your looking to relate to her start with something she likes. What is she into? What does she like to do? Find a place that you can do that thing she likes to do together, even if it is go get a bite to eat. Talk to her one on one. Good luck.

Hi there! I LOVE the idea about renting movies to watch with her because you can do it after the other kids go to sleep. Shopping at the mall, you can give her a dollar amount beforehand to avoid overspending. GOING to the movies is cool too. Just ask her what SHE wants to do!
