The kids were playing outside this afternoon when Evan came flying in the house saying "There's something going on out there. There are 4 police cars and an ambulance on our block!" Dh was outside so I ASSUMED he would parent the kids appropriately. Two minutes later the phone rang. It was a neighbor. "Okay Ami, so what the h*** is going on?" Me:"I don't know". She was watching out her window and then she said, "Oh no, they're taking him away in handcuffs". Turns out the father in the family was taken away in handcuffs while the neighborhood watched (including MY kids - ummmm I thought dh was supposed to be parenting as I was in the house and he was right there. Why were the kids not ushered away from the scene). They saw the whole thing (It was kitty corner across the street and with all the squad cars, you couldn't miss it) and they saw the officers taking a statement from the high school-aged son too. He looked like he was making gestures like punches.
We're all a little freaked out. This guy has always been really nice to us. Our kids played together a little. My kids have been in their house many times and we've been there for a few birthday parties. I've never seen or heard anything unusual either. Dh and I both spoke to the kids and explained that first and foremost, we don't know exactly what happened and a person is innocent until proven guilty. We answered the kids' questions about what would happen to him in jail (I'm assuming that's where he is)as best we could without scaring them. At this point we really don't have too many answers so all we can say is it's probably not something extremely serious and it's important for us to treat the family kindly. They're both fairly spooked as they've known him for most of their lives. I reminded them that he has always been nice to us.
What else can I say? My kids are only 8 and 11...

How scary for everyone! Big hugs!
I hope you hear something soon. We had a neighbor get arrested in our old neighborhood, but he was arrested at his place of work. It was a scary and confusing time for all of us anyway. The man ended up serving about 1.5 years. You think you know people, at least some what, and then you realize you may not know them as well as you thought.
I'm sorry about the neighborhood drama.
