DYK Thread for
September

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Below are some fun DYK blinkies--feel free to snag any if you like:

well, if they hadn't cancelled it, then all would've been okay. It's not Katrina out there. They got their act together this time! and it helped that the levees didn't break as well.

they'll probably even have power restored out there by that time as well.

It's the parishes that are VERY rural like Assumption, Terrebonne, St. Mary--not anything anybody would come do business with, that won't have power for weeks.

DYK those are probably the ones that need the most help too I would think? I read in a NYT article that a lot of the Cajun areas in the bayou are slowly being submerged & thus disappearing

I'll be attending a convention in March in New Orleans--I can't wait!

We have friends from Colorado coming in for it...it's the National Science Teachers Association annual convention, and the wife of this couple has attended a few of these. They're actually hoping to present at the convention (he's in the process of becoming a science teacher right now, too--they are both ornithologists).

So, if they do come down, Mike's going to come as a "guest" to the convention, too. He's going to be so bored...lol.

I don't know how much of my registration, mileage, accommodations the school board will pay for, but I'm going no matter what--I won't be docked pay or days because we have 2 professional development days built in. It just means that I can't attend something that's coming up--but, hey, THIS is national!

yes, coastal erosion. In fact, the reason hurricanes are hitting our area so bad is because we are losing our barrier islands which are wetlands areas and perform as buffers--slowing down these hurricanes. The loss of these because of coastal erosion is horrible.

And Louisiana IS America's Wetland, because a very significant percentage of our coastal wetlands are found in Louisiana. Here's a great website: http://www.americaswetland.com

We lost so much land from Katrina and Rita, but it's not even just the hurricanes that are hitting that are causing us to lose land. Coastal erosion is serious and it needs to be stopped NOW!

Coastal erosion is a SIGNIFICANT part of my life science teaching!!
