DYK Thread for
September

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Below are some fun DYK blinkies--feel free to snag any if you like:

DYK yes, the parent helping out w/the Scholastic books always encouraged us to order since that meant the teacher got free books which were ordered for the class library

DYK are there any other perks teachers get besides the book kickbacks ;-)

DYK what is Beta?

DYK the classes in the girls ES had a parent that would take care of all that admin work - collecting money, getting books, sorting book order & bringing it to the teacher's class

DYK the teacher didn't have to do all that himself/herself

we get bonus points for every dollar spent, and the bonus points vary by promotion. I get AT LEAST 1 bonus point for every $. 20 bonus points get me a $1 book, basically. But, there's promotions like 3X bonus points, free 3-pack book (they select the 3 books), and then every month we get $10 in free book picks for the first $20 spent in each club (I do Tab & Arrow).

In the Sept order, I spent $82, but I can't even tell you the VALUE I got for that amount because everything is usually cheaper in Scholastic. In Click (which I never order from), I got Animal Genius for DS for $20 ($30 at Wal-mart), I got 2 Nancy Drew games that Aly wanted for $20 ($10 each, retail $20 each)...that's $30 savings on those 3 games. Then, on the books, I spent $42 (at least $20 in Arrow & at least $20 in Tab), but got $40 in free books (my picks--$20 in each book order) as a Sept special, plus I used bonus points for 2 other books, and got 6 free books (one 3-pack from Arrow & one from Tab), and 100 early bird bonus points. I have 386 bonus points right now. But I'm going to place an order for at least $20 in Arrow so I can get my $10 in free book choices.

Most of my book picks are either for classroom USE (science topics) or for Aly to read, but almost all of them end up in my rotating classroom library (I have over 1000 books, so I don't have all of them at school at all times). Books that will NOT go in my classroom library are books like Encyclopedia Horrifica or Ripley's books because they WILL disappear. The school library has one current of these types of books, but 7 or 8 are lost! They just "disappear" off of the shelf.

we don't have parent volunteers, and I really don't think our school will let a parent deal with money. And there's a good reason, but I can't state it here! And it doesn't have anything to do with parents.

Beta is a national honor society in like 14 states. Junior Beta Club is 5th-9th, Senior Beta is 9th-12th. (9th can choose to be in either but not both, or in many cases, neither.)

National requires students to maintain a 3.2 GPA, we require 3.5 GPA (we have too many students with 3.5---even 3.4 would nearly double the size of our club).
