DYK Thread for
September

**For those uncertain to what a DYK thread is......**

DYK stands for Did You Know or Do You Know

It is simply a chit chat thread where every thought is written in sentences and each sentences starts with the initials DYK---it is fun, entertaining and a great way to meet the board members

Below are some fun DYK blinkies--feel free to snag any if you like:

yes--if they had known how bad it was going to be in the morning, they would've shut us down. But after 9am, it was a lot better (not counting the flash flooding, but that didn't affect the inhabited buildings).

How could you send students home early when there is a tornado watch? Some may not have anyone home, not a key to their home--where will they be if a tornado comes? They were MUCH safer at school.

Everyone that did stay home is excused though. Principal's decision. She actually had the para that was answering the phones (before the secs came in) to tell parents their kids could stay home. It was only a handful of kids that did stay home (and that could've also had to do with having 3 quizzes..lol--our absentees are not the best).

Speaking of that--kids can miss 17 unexcused days and pass the year. They KNOW this, parents know this. So, when the parent gets called because a child has missed 5 days, they're like, "Can't he miss 17?"

A teacher got married to someone with a child her kids' ages. Having been present most of the year last year, he asked his stepmom, "When do I get to use my 17 days?" He was from ANOTHER school...so it's not even just here.

But the school where Aly is supposed to go has a truancy officer at the school every day. That's why I got in trouble when Aly hadn't shown up the first 5 days of school! ;o)

It was so bad in Galveston last night.

did Deanna actually evacuate? She e-mailed me, mentioned they were telling to get out, but didn't exactly say if she was going.

I just got your e-mail. Thanks.

So she was staying then?

Do you have AT&T? I had to text a bit for 2 days. We pay for each text, so I hope it doesn't make our bill go too high. Won't be nearly as bad as last month, but that was beyond our control (work-related calls..so we can definitely claim it on taxes).

We just switched to the AT&T Unity plan AND added 150 minutes. We had 550 minutes, but that was not enough for Mike's work. Now we have 700, but we can call any AT&T landline too (which is probably more than 50, maybe even 75% out here). We couldn't get the 550 with the Unity. But it was $10 more to either just go up to 700 minutes with having to pay for AT&T landline phones, and it was also $10 more (the same exact price) to get 700 with the Unity. It was just more of a hassle because I had to combine my bills, and discontinue my auto pay, and it had to be handled over the phone rather than online.

I'm here...glad you're safe, too!

Please update us on Deanna when you get a chance!

I also have a co-worker who just moved from Houston area, so I need to call her and see how her family is.

17 unexcused days is an aweful lot.I can see a child who is really ill maybe missing that many days but those would be excused. Why on earth would you teach your child they can miss school for whatever reason and it is ok.I was annoyed at our school last year becasue the secretary does not pay attention to any notes you write,so even when your child is really ill and the absence is excused she marks it unexcused.Last year Gab missed 3 day is a row.According to her report card one was excused the other one was unexcused, they completly disreguarded the 3 day. When I called to ask her right aways she put the blaim on Gabby, saying she did not turn in the note.I said she had to because you got the on abscense right so she had to have the nte.She told me she would get back to me.That was last March and i am still waiting for the call.I did want it switched but one unexcused absence(even though it was excused),isn't worth making waves over.I can not believe parents would let kids take 17 unexcused days, just because it is supposdly legal,That really isn't preparing them for the real world and a job.
