OT- Reward Question

Yesterday the four of us went to see Phantom of the Opera. We had a fantastic time. As we were getting out of our car Tegan spotted a wallet under the car beside us. DH picked it up and we decided we were not comfortable leaving it with the parking lot attendant. The wallet had ID, his debit card credit cards, a citizenship card and an American $5.00.
So once we got home we went to www.yellow.ca to look up the gentleman so we could advise him Tegan had found his wallet. Well it didn't work so we called his bank and they called him. He called us back rather quickly and he was stunned that we had his wallet since he didn't even realize he'd lost it.
Well we live about an hour away from where Tegan had found the wallet but DH works about two blocks away from where the owner of the wallet lives. So he came by DH's work and picked it up. He said he was really glad to get his wallet back and he tried to give DH $50.00 to give to Tegan. DH turned it down. We don't want to send that message to our girls. We want them to know that you do the right thing because it is what is proper not to be rewarded for it.
WWYD?

I totally agree with you. I would politely decline the reward.

My DS once found money on the street in front of our house. There were several bills scattered along the sidewalk. He found them on a Sunday as we were coming home from our church. We live across the street from a church (not the one we go to) so we thought perhaps someone from that church lost the money. We reported it to the pastor, but nobody claimed the $$. She said my son could keep it. Instead, we donated it to the church. It was the only right thing to do!!

I feel like it taught my DS an important lesson....and that is not "finders keepers"! It is not right to keep something that doesn't belong to you, and far better to give to those in need if you can't find the rightful owner!!

Well done! I don't think people should be rewarded for doing them the right thing. It didn't cost us anything but a few minutes of time to track him down. Too many people these days expect to be compensated for helping each other out.
