Outrageous school supply lists

My kids just received the mother of all supply lists yesterday (2 1/2 weeks before school begins.) My daughter, who is in 8th grade, has the experience to weed out the stuff she knew she wouldn't use, but my son, who is in 6th, was afraid to not get everything on the list. (And some of the teachers specified brands, such as a TI calculator or a Mead 5-star 3-subject notebook, etc.) Because my daughter never had a single one of his teachers, she couldn't make any suggestions, so I bought everything on his list. Our total for his things alone, with nothing frivolous, was over $100.

Anyone else receive an outrageous list?

That's crazy about the gloves. They should include that in the supply fee, then supply each student with 2 pairs.

Usually the lists I've seen had things like tissues, baggies etc on them.

I didn't feel that Kayleigh's list was outrageous, although the graphing calculator is "recommended" (as opposed to required).

My only complaint this year, since the list was very similar to last year's list, was that this year they put on the list 2 3-4" binders, which are normally $13-14 a piece and don't often go on sale.

Jordyn's school required an agenda that they sell also.

You know what stinks about the 3" binders too is that most of them tear (the covers)...I mean I don't think they are designed for middle school kids to put in backpacks or shove in lockers.

AT least Jordyn does not need a binder for every class.Gabby needs binders for all of her core subjects. They say any size up to 2 inches,We can get away with an inch for most classes.I did have to buy an inch and 1/2 for science and math, since the 1 inch binder did not fit half the stuff on the list.Gab also requested a 1/2 inch binder, with subject dividers,so she can bring all of her homework home in that instead of lugging 6 binders back and forth every night.Last year and in 5th grade I ended up having t replace 1/2 th binders 1/2 way though the year, since they were falling apart due to over use.

Yikes, I can't see how they can dictate what BRAND you buy!

We're very fortunate in that our district covers supplies through 5th grade and DD's 6th grade list was quite modest. They require a spiral for each class but doesn't matter what kind. Some require a small binder. I had to buy DD a calculator with algebra/trig functions but they didn't specify a brand and we got one for under 20 bucks (it's not a full scientific or anything but it's good for anything she's going to be doing in middle school.)

DD's heading into 7th and won't likely get any lists until the first day of class. I imagine most of the items DD will already have from last year and I already bought replacement spirals and such.... I think I've spent 5 dollars!

I will research this and get back to you. They are to have a graphing calculator at home.
