Outrageous school supply lists

My kids just received the mother of all supply lists yesterday (2 1/2 weeks before school begins.) My daughter, who is in 8th grade, has the experience to weed out the stuff she knew she wouldn't use, but my son, who is in 6th, was afraid to not get everything on the list. (And some of the teachers specified brands, such as a TI calculator or a Mead 5-star 3-subject notebook, etc.) Because my daughter never had a single one of his teachers, she couldn't make any suggestions, so I bought everything on his list. Our total for his things alone, with nothing frivolous, was over $100.

Anyone else receive an outrageous list?

I need to take off a second purple folder for mine next year...even if I am the ONLY teacher in 7th grade to only require one folder (6th grade teachers only required one of each color). We always recommend the poly folders because they will last an entire year (and then some...if your child doesn't throw it away, they can use it again the next year) where the paper folders often won't last a whole 9 weeks.

But 7th grade has 2 of each color for each subject, and I only need them to have one. Some teachers (English comes to mind for 7th grade and 8th grade science) use 2 folders--one to stay at school and one for their notes & take-home stuff. So I told my students to keep their second purple folder in a safe place to use for next year or "JUST IN CASE" they lose this folder.

Gabby is so smart! Good for her!

I couldn't imagine a middle schooler having to carry around 3" binders like some of these posts...that's crazy, too.

My daughter had a FOUR inch binder last year in sixth grade - plus a seperate 2 inch binder for math.
And they were full and heavy all the time!

Of course, our district has a habit of making bound booklets of all their copied papers they are going to need for a unit, and those are in the notebooks to keep them in decent shape.

My daughter carried two 3 inch binders for 6th and 7th grade. This was her choice. One was for her a.m. classes and the other was for her p.m. classes. Because she is a packrat and was afraid to throw anything away last year, one of her binders burst. This year she has decided to ignore the supply list and just get one slim binder for each class, making an effort to discard the papers she no longer needs.

My 5th grader's list is about the same as yours, we spent over $100 and there were specific names on some items as well.
