"They don't pay tuition. We pay the taxes for their kids. :)"
Why? Is there an upside for your district?
I ask because this question comes up in this area. There is one high performing school district that does allow kids from other towns to enroll, but the families have to pay tuition. Tuition is about $10,000 per year, which is considered to be a bargin. A half decent private school will run a family $20,000+.
I read through this post & debated on whether to post my response or not. I went to private school for 8 years and I will not send my kids to a private school even though I went to one. I did not learn anymore than other kids did at the public schools in fact I learned less thanks to teachers that catered to the A students and not the ones who needed instruction. I know that all schools are not the same but my experiences will keep my kids from one. But is not just that even though the schools do teach the standardized test and sometimes not much else my kids have learned more than I did at their age.
But I respect everyone else's choices and recognize that not all schools & kids are the same. I do think it is great that some have had better experiences at a private school. I also wish I was the type of person who could homeschool but I recognize that I'm not. I applaud anyone who is Homeschooling their kids.
Is a Catholic school considered a private school? The Catholic school my kids go to is definitely not an "elite" school nor is it a snooty rich school---far from it. I think we pay about $2500 a year for 2 kids.
The reason I like the school is for the environment more than anything. I could do with less fundraising but nobody forces us to donate or buy anything. The kids aren't even required to partipate in them if they don't want.
My girls go to private school and they have since my oldest was in kindergarten
For me:
Pros: Smaller class size, teachers seem more patient(dd was in public K for 1 month), better art and music classes, beautiful campus in the middle of an forest preserve with a naturalist who teaches all the kids about ecology, swimming, children allowed to work at their pace and move ahead if necessary, family atmosphere, everyone knows everyone else.
Cons: price, is the biggest but I feel my kids are worth it. No kids in our neighborhood going to the school can hamper after school playdates, 15 min ride to school instead of just a couple of minutes(the public school is 3 blocks from our house), smaller class size can limit the social aspects a bit. My 11 yr old has 7 kids in her class so I worry a bit about her socialization.

I don't think private schools mean more patient teachers.
