Public or private school?

I am curious as to what you think about the differences with public vs. private schools. My kids attend public. I attended public throughout college. My girls are doing great in school, but I'm concerned about the lack of morals my older DD is being exposed to by some of her so-called "friends". I have posted recently about my concern about kids dating so young, etc. and how I will try to protect my girls from bad influences...but I think it's too late.
13 yo DD went to a friends house last night for a sleepover. She was ready to come home at 7:30 am this morning! One main reason was that the girls were talking about "nasty things some other girls in school were doing with the boys." She told me it was gross. She wouldn't tell me exactly what they were saying...but she said she was very offended. The girls did mention they heard a girl at the school had an abortion! In 8th grade!! My DD told me she was very offended by it all and asked the subject to be changed...they ignored her. This talk out of these girls, except for one that was there, surprised me.
I am now thinking that maybe private school would have a better moral influence. I'm glad I've raised a DD that was uncomfortable hearing about things these girls were talking about...and I'm sure they weren't just talking about making out.
Also, this school is one of the best middle schools in our district.
Anyhow, just curious if any of you have experienced the differences with public vs. private schools with your kids or with your own experience growing up.
I know there are kids like this at every school, more than likely, but I'm thinking there would be fewer kids like this in a private school.
What do you think?

I live in a fairly small town, but there are plenty of homeschoolers around, so yes, we get together fairly often with our homeschool group.

My DD went to private school for Kindie and Grade 1. I could not afford the $14K a year to keep her there. Our public school system is not too bad although I think that my DD could likely get more individual attention and challenge at a public school. At the school she attended (non-religious) there was I think 12 or 14 kids in a split 3-4 class, so lots of personal attention. However most of our private schools are non-religious and very very pricey, up to $20K a year. I have heard stories about people who have their kids in one of the most prestitgious private schools here (its a boarding school and day school) and its is scary. These kids come from rich families who are giving Mercedes for 16th birthday, the kids treat them like trash, accidents, etc. The drug use is rampant and I'm pretty sure the sex is pretty wild to go along with the rest. So it really depends on the school but I find that once you get to the higher grades here, the behaviour of the kids is not better than the public schools. Our Catholic schools are public so different than most places. I'm sure there are some Jewish, Muslim and other religious schools which may be more strict but I find kids are kids and putting them in a private school doesn't stop the drugs and sex.

Yeah, I'm proud of my DD speaking up when she didn't like what she was hearing. I think having a good moral system at home will help her if she remains in public schools.

Like a lot of the previous posters said, I think you need to take it on a school by school basis.

As other posters said, a lot of it depends on the individual child, and their home life and morals.

Both of my girls go to public school.

I really think that you can't pick one over the other generally--it is all about the area.

Don't assume that because the private school is christian the students will have higher moral values. Two of my nieces got pulled from their very respected christian school because they were getting physically man-handled by the boys. The staff didn't want to accept that this was happening and things got really bad for the girls after they came forward. Some of our friends have had

I too think it depends on the area where you live AND the school.
