I just read this article and it got me to wondering? How involved are you? How have you been able to remain connected to your child's school without being instrusive?

I was a volunteer in the class, field trip chaperone, party planning mama! My last parties will be this year with my 5th grader and I am PRAYING that my name is chosen (they have a parent volunterr lottery) for the trip to Springfield. He requested my presence and I know those days are coming to an end. It makes me sad =(

We live in a fairly small town also. So I see the teachers and such while I am out and about. I also work fairly close to home and my job is pretty flexible so I can make myself as available as I need to.

I was pretty heavily involved when DD was in elementary school. I did things like run the strategy game club, teach reader's theatre, tutor lower level readers, ect. I worked as a classroom aide a couple times too.

As she's gotten older I've become less involved due to a combination of her not wanting me there and there being less opportunity. In

I'm not involved at all really. There aren't any room mothers or anything here. never have been. When Kurt was younger I would volunteer to bring things to parties if they needed but I never went on field trips. I can't handle large groups of children. I went on a field trip with my daughter's daycare this spring. it totally stressed me out and there were only 15 kids there. It felt like 500 though. lol

Now that Kurt is older, they don't seem to need parent volunteers. I told Kurt I'd volunteer at a school dance, but he said that they only use teachers as supervisors. Plus, he did NOT want me there.

Well, really there's only opportunity for that type of involvement on the elementary level, which goes through 4th grade here.

My situation doesn't count because I knew each of Aly's teachers personally before she did since I work with them. She does have 2 teachers that are new to our school, but I did meet both of them before she did.

Her science teacher graded Aly's test today while I was standing there...lol.
