I think things are quite different for my DD anyway. When I was going to school there was zero pressure on me. I did not come from a family of academics and I was the first person to actually graduate highschool and go on to university. So I do put more pressure on my DD in the sense that she knows that's expected of her. I expect her to do her best, if that means top of the class great, if that means middle of the pack then great, but no slacking off just because (which is a bit where we are now). Just because everyone else in the class got 60%, doesn't mean that 65% on your part, making you the best student in the class is acceptable if you are capable of 80%. I also think parents are looking further ahead. I sometimes have to remind myself that colleges don't look at your 7th grade marks when they are selecting students. But I also know if you get off the rails now, you can't get back on sometimes later. You can't decide in Grade 11 to take college entry level courses if you don't have the basics to back it up. There is alot more talk bandied about how if you don't have a college education you are going to be stuck. So I think kids hear that more than in my day and I'm sure absorb it even if they don't seem to be paying attention.
I think school is more intense than when I was younger.
What kind of academic stresses do you think are kids are facing today?
I know that my kids have to put in far less effort than I did.
