Well, I have used some self-help books. When she was younger the "Raising a Spirited Child" saved my sanity from time to time. LOL I still use it to help me remember WHY she is doing something, that its not just to make me nuts but is part of her personality and may some day be a good trait. I've tried others to some degree but never really found a strong need I suppose.
I find the parenting boards here at ivillage are my best bet along with a couple of other similar type sites. There are always parents who have had the same experience and dealt with it differently, thus giving me a different view of the situation. Sometimes you are too close and can't see the forest for the trees.
If I was in a jam and desperate, we have a parents help phone here in Canada (there is also a kids help phone) and you can phone and ask for advice and I would not be above going to some kind of a family therapist if I really got in over my head, if she was involved in drugs or had an eating disorder. Somethings even friends can't help you with, you need professionals like doctors or therapists. My Dr. also has two young girls around Kristen's age and I've known her for 13+ years so I always feel I could go to her for advice if I was stuck and if she couldn't help at least she knows the resources that could help me.
I'm not above asking for help. If my child has a problem I'm not going to deny it and if I can't figure it out then I'll find someone who can. That's my job I figure.

I am a gut-follower, I honestly truly think that our inner instincts are the best guides we have.
I also tend to listen to my inner self!
