Revealing Body Scanners Used in LA., NY
updated 8:34 a.m. PT, Fri., April. 18, 2008

NEW YORK - Airports in New York and Los Angeles have become the latest equipped with body scanners that allow security screeners to peer beneath a passenger's clothing to detect concealed weapons.

The machines, which are about the size of a revolving door, use low-energy electromagnetic waves to produce a computerized image of a traveler's entire body.

Passengers step in and lift their arms. The scans only take a minute, and Transportation Security Administration officials say the procedure is less invasive than a physical frisk for knives, bombs or guns.

Not necessarily, each type of ring has a certain amount of metal in it so it may or may not set off the detector.

It also depends on the scanners. I went through the scanners in Canada (twice) and didn't set off the machine. Got to Germany and first one I went through my underwire bra set it off. So some are more sensitive but I would think nipple rings would be similar to earrings. But then I'm no expert on piercings. ;-)

Here's my air travel rant: (I think I've posted stuff like this before!)

I expect air travel to be absolutely wretched from the moment I wake up at 4:05 or some other hideous hour so that I can get to Logan Airport in time to wait in an interminable line to check my bags, ask to change seats so we can all sit together, wait in the security line, take off my shoes and stand on the disgusting floor, put my trinkets, etc in the nasty little bins, walk through the magnetic x-ray gate where they can see whatever it is they want to see, pick up my bags, coat and shoes, and traipse through the terminal to wait and wait for my (late) plane. And the plane itself is a mildewy, unhygienic, reeking tube of metal with the seats all mashed together so that we can catch one another's diseases, breathe in other people's
