Have any of you watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pn_awAPYlGc
"Watch this TED video featuring Gever Tulley, founder of the Tinkering School, as he discusses the trend of over-protecting kids. Tulley lists the six dangerous things that you should actually let your kids do because it will make them safer."
1) Play with Fire
2) Play with Knives
3) Throw Spears
4) Deconstruct Appliances
5) Break the DCMA
6) Drive a Car
So curious:
Ask your parents if they did any of the above as a child (obviously not the DCMA but maybe the copied someone else's 8 tracks/cassette tapes!)?
Which of the above 6 things did you do as a child?
Would you allow your child to do any of the above? Why, why not?
Thoughts?

My son has done all but break the DCMA, which I don't see any point or benefit to. My daughter hasn't driven but has done the rest, and they do the rest often actually! The rest I agree with, we need to trust our kids with things like fire and knives and we need to educate them under supervision, allow them to explore and trust that they can handle it unless proven otherwise.
I was raised similarly and do remember being entrusted with fire, knives, guns, was driving at a young age, etc. No laws broken though, just as with my son, the driving happens on our property so it was/is all legal.
I wouldn't encourage my kids to do things that actively broke the law, that's my main issue with the dcma one.
Not sure what the DCMA is, but....
I copied cassettes all the time, especially after I bought my first dual cassette recorder my senior year in HS.
well my little fire starter is doing well then. LOL
she loves to drive and can drive very well.... other than that. she has accomplished the rest of the list and is now working on destroying the house in other ways......lol
wish me luck.
I don't know what the DCMA is. We don't have spears lying about here...does a javelin count, cause I think he tried it for track and field. lol
I'm pretty overprotective. I can't help myself. I was telling someone that he has never taken the bus by himself and they thought that was crazy. He has taken apart appliances, but with my Dad in order to fix them. in that context, this sort of experimenting is okay. Otherwise, I think people are just harkening back to some mythical, nostalgic 'back in the old days." Blah.
Playing with fire? Maybe in a controlled environment. I mean, he knows how to make a campfire. The other day I saw two boys about 13 walking down the street making fire balls. Kurt said they were using a can of Axe and a lighter. This is a good thing now? Yeah, I don't think so.
1) Play with Fire - My kids get to help with building the fires in the fireplaces, the firepit, when we go camping. I never did this as a child, since there were really no opportunities for building fires in a city apartment
2) Play with Knives - my kids both have a swiss army knife and can carve/whittle Boy Scout style.

1) Play with Fire - We don't PLAY with fire, but we camp all the time and Liz helps my hubby make the fire, and she is very comfortable around the fire, helping to cook, make s'mores, etc.
2) Play with Knives - She has a knife, as we all do, that we use to quarter and skin animals after we hunt...again, I don't consider that playing LOL
3) Throw Spears - no spears here...do bows and arrows count?
4) Deconstruct Appliances - Liz has not been too interested in this
5) Break the DCMA - What the heck is this?
6) Drive a Car - We hunt and camp a LOT up in the mountains, and when we are on the logging roads down in the valleys, I let Liz drive my car for a few miles.
