Well, its much easier to name the bad than the good. LOL
For good I think Hilary Duff is good. You never hear stories of her out getting drunk (although she may you don't hear about it) and she keeps her underwear on. Someone like Kelly Clarkson, again, a talented girl who seems down to earth and you don't hear about her doing stupid stuff. Most of the cast of the Disney shows. My DD is not into them too much but she likes the girls from High School Musical who seem to be keeping out of trouble and doing their jobs. Christina Aguilera's not bad. Perhaps a bit sexy for your 11 year old to emulate, but as far as her behaviour she's a mature young woman who seems to have her life together and doesn't seem to need to court the media. Now if she'd only lay off the spray on tan and red lipstick. LOL Gwen Stafani as well. She's a bit older but girls look up to her for her style. She seems like she'd be a nice person to talk to. The Harry Potter kids see okay too, not wild stories about them being out of control and drugging and boozing.
As for bad, where to begin. Paris Hilton, Linday Lohan, Nicole Richie, Britney Spears. These girls are famous for little more than being famous and completely out of control. Thankfully Kristen has no use for any of them. She thinks they are stupid and disgusting. You know, I just realized there's not that many really really poor influences out there, they just take up proportionally more of the medias attention.
What I find unusual is that singers in general (Britney Spears excepted) seem to attract less attention. You don't hear much about Kelly Clarkson or Hilary Duff.
I would definately add Dee Brown (point guard for the Utah Jazz-former Illini star) to the GOOD list. We have personally met him and he is a true gentleman and inspiration.
WHo are some of the "good" popular/hollywood/star type influences out in the public eye for our 10-14 year olds today? Why do you think they are a good influence?
Kaitlyn is 12 and likes Ashley Tisdale, Hillary Duff, the High school musical cast, Dylan and Cole Sprouse...all of which I think are fine. Mandy Moore is great too...I was really impressed when I saw her on Oprah (I think) about a year ago, she came out looking so well dressed (not skanky at all!).
Deron is doing awesome! He plays for the Jazz too (2nd year) and did fantastic this year. He is a big star for them. We watch NBA all the time and love it when we get to see the Jazz play.
Luther plays for the Houston Rockets and James Augustine is now in the Developmental league.
We are HUGE Illini Basketball Fans, actually my son just recently got home from Bruce Weber's camp. Do you live near U of I too? When did you graduate?
Oh yeah, we are HUGE Illinois fans here. I graduated from UofI in 1986 (was there a little longer doing some post graduate work.)
We're not big NBA fans so once a player graduates, we kind of lose track. I did watch Deron play a little during the NBA playoffs.
Is that cool that Michael Jordan's son is going to Uof I??? I know the kid rooming with his son this summer, he went to our K-8 and his mom teaches there! He said he got to meet MJ. How cool is that!?
We live near Peoria. We try to go to a game every year. My 13yo DD LOVES UofI basketball. We don't miss a game on tv!
To be totally honest, I haven't got a clue. We avoid television and rarly go to movies. In general, Hollywood influences have been something we have chosen not to expose our family to. When we hear about stuff going on with actors/actresses, we usually turn a deaf ear.

I think Tam did a really good job pointing out the good & the bad.
Adding Mandy Moore & Anne Hathaway to the good list. At least they don't make the news, right?

I LOVE Dee Brown!!! (of course I went to Illinois!)
Do you know how Deron Williams is? I always really liked him and he seemed like a good kid too.
