I am a mom that thinks they should be clean cut and neat looking, but I'm also not willing to get into major battles over it, so we try to reach a happy medium.

I let my kids select their own hair styles, it's only hair! The "long and shaggy" look isn't fashionable here :) with only a very small handful of boys wearing shaggy hair...a style my son doesn't like (and boys he doesn't hang around with). My son has a hair style he prefers (and I'm open to him changing his hair style, or leaving it alone). My daughter really prefers short hair and recently had her long mid-back length hair cut to just below her ears with bangs and tapered on the side. Now she may grow it out to chin length. Ever changing!

The issue of coloring or highlighting hair hasn't seriously come up as neither of my kids like the look that they have seen on others and aren't interested in having it done to themselves!

I do insist on clean hair, regardless of hair style.

In this day and age the look is long and shaggy - are you kids into it? Um NO..thank goodness! Hubby is military so my son has grown up wearing 'short' hair so to HIM this is normal. We don't really bash other boys who have long hair although I HAVE threated to put a barrette on one boy's hair in my house so I could see his face! He thought it was pretty funny!

Do you let them choose how to wear their hair? My son does prefer his hair shorter now, but he prefers to do nothing to it...not even comb it over. We do insist he do SOMETHING to it before walking out the door. As a smart alec gesture one night before dinner, after a shower, he mooshed it into a mohawk..that got some chuckles at the dinner table! My daughter, on the other hand, pretty much does whatever she wants. She's very opinionated and when I tried to grow her hair out long when she was young..we she'd simply chop it off herself because she wanted it short so I wouldn't mess with it. Now I just leave her alone! :P

How old should they be before they do it completely by themselves? What do you do when they've done it but it looks awful? We tell our son he looks like 1)Eddie Munster or 2)that he looks 3 yrs old when he tries to wear his hair flat on his head...he doesn't like that. My daughter doesn't really do anything too bad, although she thinks she's cool to put a hair clip on one half, pulling it back like it's a side ponytail on the other side? Looks like a dork but we ignore it! HAHA!!

Do you allow them to color, highlight or do anything like that with their hair? I have put light highlights myself into their hair when I am doing my own, but my daughter of course now wants 'hard core' highlights with various colors. I want her to at least wait until high school. Even then I won't let her do anything too wild! I'm pretty conservative although I started using Sun In at 15 when I was a lifeguard..

Are you a mom that thinks they should be "clean cut" looking? Initially I'd say no, but after answering these questions I guess I am a bit like that. I don't make them wear collared shirts and/or have them tucked in, but I DO insist on brushed teeth and fixed hair before walking out the door...We live in a world of first impressions and the way other kids dress and present themselves at the school really freaks me out..I don't want anyone freaking out over MY kids! LOL!

I am sure my answer will not surprise anyone.
Although my daughter has had all of these things done to her hair.
NOT BY MY CHOICE OR HERS....
So to answer this question. I think she needs her hair washed and cleaned. Long or short, I believe its her decission. I do beleive there are cuts out there that can make you look too old for your age and those are unexceptable. But we pretty much see eye to eye so it works for us.

Samantha has medium kindof curly hair. She keeps it nice and shampooed.I dont really care as long as it is clean what she does. Some times If I say I dont like that stlye much she wears it more.Sometimes I think it looks bad and her freinds say yuck and thats all it takes.I loved messing with my hair as a kid so I dont fight with her over it.(I had pink hair in high school after a dye mishap eeck)
As far as ds he is only 5 and loves short hair long hair is for girls he tells the boy at school with longer hair.

All of my girls do their own hair. If anything Kiana (12) does Vanessa & Jazmine's hair (10). Kiana has red streaks in her hair. The twins have to wait until they are 12 to get streaks as well. Hair is hair to me, it grows back. If their looks horrible, but they think it looks good then fine so be it. I know kids will go through their phases.

In this day and age the look is long and shaggy - are you kids into it?
No

Do you let them choose how to wear their hair?
Yes

How old should they be before they do it completely by themselves?
My 9 year old does more for herself than my 10 year old, because the 10 year old has very thick hair and it's more difficult to put up. Our 16 year old came to live with us at age 8 and I have never helped her with her hair. Hers is naturally very curly.

What do you do when they've done it but it looks awful?
Tell them to fix it or help them if they are having trouble.

Do you allow them to color, highlight or do anything like that with their hair?
My 10 year old has dark blonde hair and and we have coloerd it, but not for the purpose of the color. Her hair is very oily and it helps to dry up some of the oils for awhile.

Are you a mom that thinks they should be "clean cut" looking?
That is my preference and so far it hasn't been an issue.
