I pretty much let her decide what she wants. Maybe its easier with girls. When she was 5 she decided she wanted super short pixie cut. It looked so cute and she loved it. Now its halfway down her back and she's been growing out her bangs for nearly 2 years. She says she wants layers when it gets longer, so we'll see if she changes her mind. She talks about coloring it and wants highlights but since I don't pay $75 for highlights for myself I'm not paying for her to have them. Maybe for her birthday she'll get a g/c, we'll see. But as long as its clean, whatever style she wants is fine. I am usally the one brushing her hair every morning because I love to. She sits on the computer chair and I brush her hair. Its so thick and shiny I just enjoy brusing it. LOL Lame mommy entertainment.

My two can wear their hair any way they want. My dd (13) has long wavy hair and, yes, I let her get it streaked at 12yo. My son's hair is long and shaggy, even though he just had it cut. He only wanted the curls cut off. Personally, I prefer the long and shaggy look to his previous buzz cut. I don't care about "clean cut" I'd prefer them to be happy with how they look.

The style for girls hair is long and smooth, and usually swept into a ponytail, or a messy bun. It haven't seen hair styles I would call shaggy.

The boys are wearing their hair longer and shaggy.

I like my daughters hair to look clean and neat when walking out the door. Her hair is shoulder length, and medium brown. It is smooth, straight, and all one length. Most of the time she wears it in a ponytail, but sometimes it is down, and parted to the side. She normally does her own hair. The only time I do it is when she wants her hair in a french braid.

I try not to make hair an issue. She has asked when she can experiment a little with color, and I told her to ask me next year.

its not lame to want to brush your daughters hair. When jackie was little she would not let anyone do anything to her hair. So when she "allows" me to I enjoy doing things to her hair. But if it takes too long then forget it she makes me quit. And if it hurts or pulls or she does not like it, my time is over. She is picky with her hair. Its kind of strange she wont let me do anything to her hair but her step mother does everything. And gets away with it. Maybe thats why I cant.

Personally I have always allowed my son to have some say in how his hair is kept. After all it's his hair. So long as it's clean and combed (don't mind the messed up look so long as it's not tangled).

Connor, 13, prefers his hair to be very short. He has really thick hair and finds it difficult to manage when its' longer so he tends to go with a very close and clean cut look. Personally I like his hair a little longer, but at 13 years old he shouldn't need me to help him with his hair, and short is easier for him to manage on is own.

Nancy,

Could you elaborate on this comment please...

"I wouldn't let a child of this age group color their hair, I think it sends the wrong message about self acceptance and ego."
