My only concern with the WiFi would be that instead of typing out their assignments they'd be surfing facebook. I don't think computers are a bad thing by nature, they can have many uses and most kids can type much faster than they can write so it might be useful, I would just want guarantees that it doesn't turn into 8 hours of net surfing and playing solitaire during the school day.
It is the same with my dh.In fact when he uses his work lap top here he still can no get on some of those sites.
Although Gabby does say that they can watch you tube at school, when they are on the computers. Not anything really bad,but the boys did look up the vanessa Hudgens pics once.Gabby actually did need a computer at home for a lot of stuff last year.I honestly don't trust eachers to monitor stuff.I would hope that the firewalls are stricter in the schools than they are at home.Since schools have more kids to monitor.
Both of my girls went to a technology magnet school a few years ago, 5th and 6th grade and they both had laptops. It worked out well and did their class work with the laptops on their desk. The school had a firewall and the only problems we ran into were kids stealing the charger cords.
I haven't really thought about this too much, since it hasn't been mentioned around here.
As far as kids surfing facebook, porn, etc., I would think they could set up a firewall or whatever to block that stuff.

**Side note to Brandi:
My district was part of a pilot program to test the effectiveness of lap tops in the classroom.
Great topic Laura!
I wrote a paper about this for one of my classes last year.
I think it is a great idea.
