We have pretty good healthy insurance through my job. For instance, my son was admitted to the hospital for 2 days over the summer, and it was completely covered. It's the hospital I work at. Also lab draws are completely covered as well. My DD is hypothyroid and on Synthroid, her pills cost us $2.00 a month. Not bad.
As for how I feel about Obama "messing" with health coverage, I think I agree with Nicole, how can you mess with something that is so screwed up. For a long time I didn't have insurance and even Medi-Cal sucked for us.
Yes, we do have good health insurance but we pay more for it every year and it covers less. And of course, it's tied to DH's job. That is one of the most irrational things about this country: you have to have a job in most places to get health insurance. Of course our system is screwed up, since people without health coverage are those most likely to use ER services, which cost a lot more than a doctor visit.
DH's company just announced layoffs and the first thing I thought of was how we'd handle the health insurance issue if he's laid off. I work for a church but don't qualify for insurance. In any case, it would bankrupt them to pay for us so I'd rather deal with COBRA or whatever is available if his job is cut.
COBRA is really expensive. When dh switch jobs a few years back,we looked into it and we opted to take the chance and go with out health insurance for the month it look his new insurance to kick in.Which could have been really stupid, but COBRA was a lot more than we were willing to pay and if we would have had to pay the amt for several months there would have been no way we could afford it,especially if someone was not working.
I chose not to get COBRA when I changed jobs (this was when I was still single back in the 80s). The first month on my new job, when I was still waiting for their insurance to kick in, I went home feeling dizzy, passed out and hit my head on a table, then ended up in the ER. I had to pay about 1200 bucks out of pocket! COBRA would have been cheaper.
Here in MA, it's illegal to not have insurance, so if someone can't afford private insurance, they have to take the state's minimal cost (and probably minimal coverage) plan.
Yes we have coverage thru our employer, the federal gov't. DH carries the policy & I have the dental policy (which is separate). Its by no means cheap but we're just glad to be able to get it. I think the whole health care system has so many issues that not much can be done to "mess" it up.

I'm not sure how it could get worse.
