I personally have no problem with men teaching. Some of my favorite teachers were men. At my kids old school in CA, the most coveted 1st grade teacher was male.
I had a male teacher for kindergarten, 4th & 5th grade growing up and although my 4th grade teacher was a bit "gruff", by far they were all my favorite teachers growing up.
This kind of thing makes me bonkers. This whole paranoia that any male who likes kids that aren't his (and like his own as well) must be a pedophile. Everyone is a young teacher at some point. You don't start at age 45 usually. If he wants to teach younger kids he's a pedophile, if he teaches highscool then he's after the young teenage girls. How can they ever win? I think kids should have teachers of both genders all their lives. The world is composed to two genders and I think its useful for them to experience both in a setting outside of the family. It also seems that there are just as many female teachers who are molesting male students as male. Certainly makes the news anyway. No one with a son would freak because their son had a female teacher.
Anyway, that kind of narrow-minded thinking just frosts my pumpkin. I and Kristen have had good teachers and bad teachers. Gender had nothing to do with that assessment.
I agree with you Tam! Everyone starts as a young teacher.
This article kind of offended me a litttle because my son LOVES kids and he is not gonna a be a kid forever. if he chooses to work with kids, will people view him as a pedophile?
I don't have any problem with male teachers. Of all the teachers I've had, some of the most memorable have been men.
My fave teacher of all time was in grade 8 and he was a man. Also, my grade 10 math teacher was really cool - I failed his class but he had great taste in music and used to bring tapes (haha!) to class. I'd never heard of new order before that. :o)
My brother is a teacher and he is great at it. i would suck so bad at it. I don't have the patience or temperament. I think its more about personality than anything else.
Last year my son had 3 teachers. his math/science teacher was a guy and that was the only class he didn't get in trouble in and did all of his homework for. he was so excited that that teacher switched to grade 9 so he can have him again next year.
Incidentally, the director of my daughter's daycare is a male and so is one of the teachers. I found it a little odd at first - not creepy, just different since it so isn't the norm. But again, if you've got the temperament, I don't care what gender you are. if you can deal with a bunch of screaming and whiny 3 year olds, good on you!
Wha???? Scratching my head here... My dad was also a teacher. I really, really don't get what anyone would object to!!!! The favorite teachers my kids have had have been males. Good lord! We should be just thankful to all the decent teachers, male or female, who are doing what is often a VERY thankless job!!!

>>>sometimes the youngers teachers are just plain better because they have so many new and innovative ideas and are still very enthusiatic to teach.
