QOTW: Movie Ratings & Rules
| Mon, 10-30-2006 - 7:21am |
Our Question of the Week for this week is the following:
(submitted by a board member--thanks)
What about the rating of movies & shows, do you limit what rating is watched and what guidelines do you go by?
Movies have gotten so different with content then they used to be---things that are rated PG & PG-13 are a lot different than they used to be!
So share with us what your rules

We used to have straight -- PG okay, anything above that not okay.

When I insist that I am 'right," I slam the door of my mind. I remain locked in past
For the most part, PG and under. Hannah has seen a few PG13. I think it SO depends on the movie. If the movie is questionable, I usually look on one of those websites like kids in mind.com that tell everything about the "bad" parts of the movie.

We go by the ratings to begin with and then content.

Oh yeah! NO ONE watches rated R movies at our house. Not even the adults. Kids can watch anything up to PG without worrying and PG13 has to be checked first.

PG13 is more like the R I grew up with - hence the reason we check it!
So share with us what your rules & limits are when it comes to the movies your tween/teen is allowed to watch! Do you have a strict rule on ratings or does it depend on content?
We watch a lot of movies, I mean A LOT of movies. We have our own library that we are constantly adding to. We don't do gore, sex, blood, unnecessary language - pretty much the norm -
It really depends for us. Well of course NC-17 and R are out of the question. But most PG I wouldn't even think about and for PG-13 it depends on the content. I tend to allow more violence if it is stylized like I Robot or Van Helsing than realistic and I try to steer clear of graphic sex, but that's not usually in PG-13. We almost always watch movies together so if I find anything was borderline I can address it after the movie is over. Thankfully she has no desire to watch Saw, or Nightmare on Elmstreet or those type of movies. But I'm pretty lenient on the language front. She

Nothing rated R and we actually do some research reguardind content of any other movie he wishes to see. Ultimately though, we've left most of the choice up to him. We trust his judgement. All we ask is that he make an informed choice and not just go see something because everyone else is.

I am very very laid back when it comes to movies and ratings!

If it's PG then I don't worry about it, but I will scan the back to see what it's actually about.
If it's PG-13 then it gets a closer looking at, perhaps reading family reviews online. If it's for violence, language, dramatic situations then I'm not too concerned because if it was too bad it would be rated R.
What makes me angry is the sexuality and situations portrayed in PG-13 movies! Anyone see Mean Girls? It deserved a PG-16 rating! Showing teens having sex and mom asking if they wanted a condom? Come on! How many 13-15 yr old girls really need to be seeing that? So if there's any sexuality I either screen it or watch it with them!
We've let them watch rated R movies with us, but only after some serious parental discussion and consideration!
