Music? What are your kids listening to? Do you know all the lyrics? Do you think they are important? Did you ever backtrack and not allow a certain artist or song into your home because of behaviors by the artist? Do you expose them to music outside of radio/mtv? Theater? Concerts? Opera? Musicals? Lessons?
How strict are you with the music your tween/teen listens too?

I'm not as strict as I used to be. Ds is 13 and has very good judgement in terms of what he listens to. He has a few cd's that he's given us because he found the music to be offensive (not overly so but enough to bother him). He's sensitive to the content of what he listens to anyway as he wants to be a Pastor.
Mostly he listens to Christian music, music from broadway musicals, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennet, Sting, Bon Jovi, Some Country music, etc... He has a good variety of music. We do not have cable tv so he's never seen a music video. He can't stand pop music today as he finds much of it offensive. He also doesn't care for hard rock much.
He sings in two different choirs, is in a barbershop group, plays guitar (taking a break from lessons right now due to finances), and tries out for the school musicals (Bye Bye Birdie this year). He doesn't care for Opera, but does enjoy off broadway and ammature productions.
For the most part I let him use his own judgent concerning content and feel that he is does well in terms of making responsible and informed choices. He checks PluggedInOnline.com and uses it as a tool for making choices concerning movies, music and DVD rentals.

The girls have not been to a concert yet but we have taken them to see Wicked and The Lion King. In March we are going to see Phantom of the Opera. It is the girls favourite right now. Tegan has downloaded the music onto her MP3 player and she has asked for the moive for Christmas. They will freak when we give them their tickets Christmas morning!!
The girls also take piano lessons.

My kids both prefer country music, which I'm happy about because while some of the lyrics are questionable (save a horse, ride a cowboy!), for the most part they aren't as raunchy and outright suggestive as many, and rarely will you hear a bad word.
My 13yo is a complete metalhead, just like her mom. She's currently into Cradle of Filth, Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, Slipknot, Dir en Grey, and the like. I've taken her and her friends to concerts for My Chemical Romance/Green Day, Lacuna Coil /Rob Zombie, Breaking Benjamin/Godsmack, and we have tickets to see Disturbed. Yes, I know the lyrics, swearing doesn't bother me. Neither does death, destruction, sex, and mayham. I ban nothing; discuss everything.
She loves musicals, Phantom of the Opera got her into them, and remains her favorite. We listen to some classical music; she prefers Mozart to my Tschaikovsky. She takes piano and would like to take guitar as well.

Music? What are your kids listening to? Mostly popular tween music, and some Broadway tunes
"Do you know all the lyrics?" No, but I get the gist.
"Do you think they are important?" While I am aware of what she is listening to, and I will occasionally glance at the lyrics, I will not say I diligent about it. The music she listens to is pretty tame.
"Did you ever backtrack and not allow a certain artist or song into your home because of behaviors by the artist?" It hasn't been an issue.
"Do you expose them to music outside of radio/mtv? Theater? Concerts? Opera? Musicals? Lessons?" As often as possible. We started taking the kids to local theaters at a young age. They like musicals. My daughter has also been to a children's opera, and has been to the ballet several times. My daughter currently takes voice and violin lessons.
How strict are you with the music your tween/teen listens too? I wouldn't allow explicit or violent lyrics, but that type of music doesn't appeal to my daughter.
