Thankfully this has not been too much of an issue for us. She's not into wearing make-up to school and I usually have to convince her to get her hair cut. We just got some layers around her face which she likes. She wanted highlights a year ago, I paid a small fortune for some you couldn't see, then did the rest myself. They are quite grown out but she's never asked for more. I think that error in my judgement of having a fancy salon do them will serve me well in the long run because she realizes that just because you pay big bucks doesn't mean its going to be good and that Mom can use a $15 kit just as well. As for clothes I like her to have "nice" clothes and fit in, but if she wants $100 jeans she's going to have to pay for them. She desperately wants Applebottom jeans (mostly because you can't get them here so no one really has any). They are up to $100 and when we are in NYC we are going to look for them and she can buy them. I buy her clothes at Aeropostle (got some great deals at an outlet in Florida), Old Navy and a few other chains. She's not into the expensive stores yet, she's more concerned with being "different". She doesn't want the same clothes everyone else has (within reason).

So from my perspective I will help her fit in as best I can, but I won't break the bank to do it. If she wants something that is outside my limits she has to pay for it, or pay the excess that I would pay. If I'll pay $40 for jeans and they cost $70, she can chip in the $30.

The only major issue we have had is that my son wants to wear contacts instead of his glasses.

We're fortunate in athat we don't have the fashion issues here yet--our problem is that Sherina is so tall that her clothes are expensive simply because we can't always buy them at Wal-Mart.

We're really lucky in that none of their friends are label-conscious. Many of dd's friends are fashion conscious, but isn't reliant on certain labels and so far we've been able to shop reasonably.

My son could not care less about fashion or labels!

I will not allow my daughter to do highlights at such a young age (she's 10). That's a road we'll have to travel as it happens, oddly enough I'd support my daughter (or son) getting purple hair before I'd support highlights, I just hate to see children so young already thinking they are not good enough and need to alter their appearance to fit in, or to be more than they are. My dd has natural highlights at this point, and her hair lightens up a TON in the summer, so highlights aren't even on her radar and the only friend she knows with highlights got them at age 15. I can't say when I'd be OK with it, but definitely not now, and definitely would not allow them just because her friends had them. None of her friends wear makeup (again, other than the now 16 year old), she's around a lot of horse people and they sometimes wear makeup for show, but never otherwise.

Homeschooling definitely has advantages in the peer pressure department. My kids have lots and lots of friends and a very active social life, but they aren't pressured in any way by them, for whatever reason things tend to be less pressured and appearance does NOT seem to be a focus for them.

Bottom line, I'm happy that I don't have to deal with it, but if I did, I would not be supportive of a constant supply of money just to fit in.

Kayleigh isn't interested in designer clothes, makeup, salon treatments, etc. I'd be happy if she was more interested in her appearance. The only name brand thing she ever asks for is the Converse sneakers.

Well, actually, I believe it is my job to counteract some of the popular influences on kids - not contribute more to it!
