Do you allow your tween/teen to wear whatever they want to school or do you let them wear whatever as long as it meets school dress code requirements? Is there anything in particular you would NOT let them wear out?
Moms of girls---what about if your child wanted to wear a thong?

Here's my answer to this day old questions UNIFORMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My tween (almost 12) hasn't wanted to wear anything I'd consider inappropriate.

Yay!!! My kids have to wear uniforms to school!!!!
However, when Hannah is not wearing her uniform she prefers jeans and layered tshirts. She thinks thongs are gross. She does have a skirt or two that I think are a little short, hopefully she will outgrow them soon and not replace them.
Nathan will NOT wear jeans and I'm sure baggy jeans would be out of the question for him.
He's only 10, so who knows what will happen when he is older.

I allow my son to wear what he want so long as it meets the criteria of the school dress code as well as my personal requirement, which is that the clothes fit, are clean and in good repair. I would never allow my son to wear pants that were hanging off of him anywhere, however on a weekend he can wear his torn jeans to hang out in if he likes.
My son's style is somewhat eclectic. Some days he'll wear dress shoes with a button down shirt and jeans, other days he will wear a polo shirt with pair of cargos or jeans, Friday he wore a white T-shirt, skinny fit blue jeans and a jean jacket (collar up). Today he wore a pair of cargo pants, a Christian T-shirt and a hooded sweatshirt.

Well, my kids wear
With my daughter it's an everyday issue around here! She has tons of t-shirt and tanks that she's outgrown and she seems to feel THESE are the idea items to wear to school...and that wearing a jacket over them somehow makes them okay..NOT! I feel like I have to hold inspection every morning..raise your hands, turn around, bend over...she definitely pushes the limits. I have been secretly weeding out these clothes when they come through the laundry, but only a few here and there so she doesn't catch on! LOL! She would wear a thong if she thought she could sneak it by me, but she knows I'll catch her. She really is a good kid but the school enviromnent seems very relaxed about what the kids can wear so she's surrounded by girls who wear next to nothing so this seems normal to her. Which of course translates to the parents being ABNORMAL for trying to instill respect for herself and the way she dresses!
As for my son, luckily he's always been super skinny so he's self-conscious about pants being too baggy...he prefers t-shirts and normal jeans...I have started asking him to wear a collared shirt once a week and he just shrugs..whatever. He really could care less about what he wears and he'll be 16 in two weeks! I'm just grateful that he just sneers at kids who dress ganster, but unfortunately he sneers at anyone who dresses a certain way, even preppy! LOL! He'll clean up for a reason but otherwise I think he actually takes pride in dressing like he doesn't care! LOL!

My son and daughter (both age 12) are both conservative and don’t like clothes that are “out there” (i.e. no tank/skinny strap/belly showing tops for dd, no baggy pants below the butt for ds), so they don’t own any clothing that would be inappropriate for school (or anywhere else). Their preferred style of dress is casual and appropriate and clearly within the school dress code.
I would not allow them to wear to school any article of clothing that did not meet the school dress code. While my dd doesn’t like skinny strap tank tops (and doesn’t own any), I personally have no objection to them...but not at school (since it doesn’t meet the dress code). However, it’s a non-issue cause my dd doesn’t like that style.
I have no problem with thongs (I consider them just another style of underwear) or mini skirts (as long as underwear isn’t showing when you walk), and wouldn’t have a problem if dd wanted to wear them. My goodness, I wore mini skirts in my teens and early 20’s! At this time dd isn’t interested in thongs and while she does have a couple of skirts that are now mini’s, it’s due to her growing (they were not purchased as mini skirts) and I’m fine with her wearing them if she wants to.
I don’t like clothing where underwear is exposed (whether it’s thongs peeking or boys with baggy pants showing their underwear), and neithe do my kids. My son doesn’t like the extreme baggy jeans with underwear showing, and it's not a style of dress that his friends wear, so it’s a non-issue. He likes casual loose cargo jeans, and his sit below the waist, but well above the butt. No undies showing.

I'm not a fan of thongs, but I wouldn't forbid it as long as it wan't showing and the clothes she had on over it were not see through. I let my girls wear short skits, but no so short they show everything. I'm glad the girls are wearing leggings underneath right now.
What are your thoughts on dress codes for your child when going to school?
I want them to look decent. I don't allow tight low cut tops on my girls or tops that you can see through unless they wera a tank top under it. They also aren't allowed to wear their pants so tight they have to be peeled off. They all 3 have different taste, but it's pretty conservative. So far I consider myself lucky.
