It's no big deal here. Both of my kids have gone to school with and are friend with kids of same-sex parents. So my kids have been aware of that kind of family situation since preschool. To them, it's just another kind of family, like the kids who have divorced parents or remarried parents... I don't think they think twice about it. DS has said he doesn't get why people would oppose it, since they already live together and have kids anyway.
Well, we've had same sex marriages in Canada for a few years now. To me its no big deal. Recently I read that the two designer guys Colin and Justin got married last Christmas here. So I just said "Hey Kristen, Colin and Justin got married last year." Her response is "Oh, where?". Its no different than if I said any two celebrities got married. I treat it the same. The whole idea of same sex relationships came up when she was quite young and she commented that someone couldn't have two dads. I explained that some people do. That while most people fall in love with someone of the opposite sex, some boys fall in love with boys and some girls fall in love with other girls. Boys can adopt a baby and then it will have two Dad's or some women use a special Dr. to help them have a baby and then it has two Moms. At that point her response was "huh". She was young so it was just another interesting fact she accepted like anything else I told her. There was a lesbian couple on our street who were having a baby. I didn't know them personally but they were at a Christams party we were at. So its not like its a foreign concept for us.
I would have no trouble if they discussed it at school. But I don't really think its necessary. I mean beyond reinforcing that there are different kinds of relationships, MF/FF/MM, and that all are valid choices that should be the end of it. It has no effect on me whether two men or two women marry, just as whether any two people get married. If you feel that strongly about someone and want to get married go for it.

It's definitely going to come up, as my niece has a girlfriend.
I think it's no biggie.
