Once I was in 7th grade we always had single sexed gym classes, thats just the way it was for gym.I know I liked it because I would not have wanted a boy to see me in my dorky gym uniform.Gabby is in 6th grade and having mixed gym classes does not seem to bother.Like you I hav'nt read the article,it probably does talk about math and science,so who knows if Gab would do better or not.She does not feel the need to act dumb or dumb herself down around boys yet. Then again she claims to hate math and science and says her mind does not work that way and she has to force it to work that way.Who know, she certainly doesn't struggle in math or science for that matter. She just tends to like creaative stuff better, and I do agree that she honestly enjoys it more.
I've heard positive things about single gender classroom. I think there are advantages to both. Sometimes it would be better not to have the distraction of the opposite sex as they spend way too much time focussing on whether someone likes them and not on algebra and there are learning differences but I don't think you can categorically say that ALL boys or ALL girls learn in a certain way. I wouldn't freak out if our schools went to that system, but I'm not seaking out an all girls school either.
Really not sure.Probably not, because the work force is unisex,so you have to get used to working with both sexes.Plus being with all girls brings a whole new set of issues.Gabby has friends who brang about having a 97 instead of a 96,they are both A's for crying out load. Then again Gab is only in 6th grade and the boy girl stuff is just starting,so who knows.I do know that in math when they do partner quizes she is always happy to be paired with a boy.I definatly would not push for it.I do wonder if she was with all girls she would consider her self good in math and science.Although,I do think she is right she really has no interest in her brain working that way.She loves to use the creative side of her brain, and she loves words, and anything that allows her to be crative. However, her highest grade this 9 weeks was actually in science.I do know that last year Gabby liked having boys in her class when they made terreiums she was happy to let the boys touch the bugs to put in the terrium.Plus I think the biys make class more interesting for Gabby, because they are usually the funny ones, they sometimes make boring classes more fun for her.
I agree with you.......... i am pretty happy with the way the school puts them all together. I am sure all girls class is easier and vice verse.........but what is this teaching our kids? how are they going to get along if they never have a chance to in a somewhat controlled environment.

I didn't read the article, but have experience with this...
First, personal:

I would definately put my kids in a single gender classroom especially for middle school.
I agree with Tam. I wouldn't object to the single gender classrooms, as I can see how that would help with the distraction of the opposite sex.
I think it would be interesting in the middle school years, but I also wouldn't change schools to get it.

I think it is an interesting concept and would be curious what the test results show in 5 years--out of curiosity.
Like another poster said--I wouldn't change schools to get this, but in certain classes if it were an option I would go for it.
