Does your child get that amount of sleep? My 13 & 15 yr olds both average 9 hours of sleep per night. My son has always thrived on less sleep and will lay in bed and read or play his gameboy all night if we let him. My daughter on the other hand..would you believe as a toddler she'd rattle the bars of her crib from the outside and beg for 'night-night'? She'll put herself to sleep at 8pm if nothing is going on!

DO you still have a set bedtime for your 10-14 year old? Showers by 8pm, down time in rooms and lights out by 9pm...Mom and Dad need their time alone! LOL!

Studies have also been done that show that they should NOT have any electronics in their rooms--this includes IPODS, CD players, head sets, portable game systems, etc... that when these electronics are in their room, tweens/teens get less solid sleep--how do you feel about this study result and what electronics does your 10-14 year old have in their room? My 15 yr old son has a gameboy and stereo and YES I'd have to remove the gameboy if I bust him using it. My daughter has all kinds of stuff but she'd rather sleep so it's not an issue!

I think the point of hte study was that in this day and age it is more "acceptable" if you will, for our kids to have rooms filled with tons of electronics and this is causing them to constantly be stimulated and therefore not only go to bed later b/c they haven't had much down time(playing games, listening to loud music, watching Tv, etc...is very stimulating) but also shows they are getting a more restless sleep.

My tween is a lot like me--we tend to be more of a night owl and we require less sleep!

Kelsey gets around 10-11 hours per night. She will ask to go to bed if she is tired. Tegan gets between 9.5-10 hours nightly. The only thing the girls have in their room that is electronic is a CD player and they do not play it when they are in there trying to sleep. I agree that electronics can interfere with sleep but the reason mine don't have televisions or gaming systems is not sleep related. I like them to read before they go to sleep not listen to music or watch t.v. and yes, i also read before i go to bed for the night.

My 11.5 year old DS goes to bed between 8 and 8:30 every night (because he WANTS to! LOL) and gets up at 6:30 am. This is a kid who needs his sleep. He LoVeS to sleep!! He really does just get in bed on his own at night...no arguments or begging to stay up late!

He has a CD player and an MP3 player which he keeps in his room, but he does not fall asleep to them. No t.v., computer or game system in his room...and there won't be as long as he lives under my roof!

My 13 yo dd gets about that amount of sleep - although she has been sleeping more lately because of recovering from the flu.

She does have a cd player in her room, but it is not left on at night.

She also does have a regular bedtime, with very few exceptions.

My eleven year old daughter seems to require 9-10 hrs. of sleep.Even on weekends she's up at 6:30- 7:00 am. She has a tv in her room but will call me in to say shes done and wants to go to bed now. This usually occurs at about 8:30 pm. I think that when you keep your kids mentally and physically active, throughout the day, but NOT overscheduled they form a healthy balance and accept bedtime as a natural pleasure without restricting use of ipods, computers, tvs and other forms of electronic entertainment. These items become just something else she touches base with every couple of days and she prefers outdoor time and her family and friends more.
