Our Board Question of this week is the following... How do you balance extracirricular activities with school.

I am careful not to allow my son to take on too much.

Right now he has Choir rehearsals Tues afteschool till 4:30 pm.

His barbershop group rehearses on Thursdays afterschool until pm.

and his student historic preservation team meets on Fridays afterschool until 4pm.

Aside from that he works on the school newspaper (meets during 4th period every week, so he has to get permission to attend and doesn't need to attend each week).

Things don't get too hectic until the Drama club kicks in following winter break. Rehearsals three times per week afterschool until 4:30 pm. In any case he's home before 5 pm every night which leaves plenty of time for regular school work. Though major projects can be a challenge time wise.

If my son's grades started slipping then he would have to seriously consider what is getting in the way and back off until his grades came back up. Though that has not been a problem in the past.

My son is very good at knowing when he can't handle his schedule and has actually skipped writing for issues of the newspaper due to having too much school work or a major exam coming up. I trust his judgement.

I think next year will be harder when he's in highschool and he has to get used to being in HS and doing all his work and managing his extras.

My kids have always had a ton of activities, but never had a problems with school. I am dd scout leader and she is in youth group, but these only meet a few times a month. She has private flute lessons that meet at school twice a week and private lessons once a week. Band and choir meet before school once a week each. She has a skills and drills class for a few week in volleyball and also field hockey. She has religious ed on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights. Handbells meets once a week after school. Scrapbooking club meets twice a month after school. She is also in the 7th grade activity days that meet only a few times a the school year. She will take skiing later in the winter. Both kids attend German school on Friday nights and we all take Tae Kwon Do on Saturdays.
