"I am going to insist that Nik be moved up in spelling."

What grade is she in that she still has spelling tests?

I don't want to get her out of her IEP but I would like the speech done elsewhere. her diagnosis is FAS which has been questioned for yrs. but we know better. When I say her teacher only sees the diagnosis I mean she just sees the lack of potential there for most FAS kids. My dd luckily isn't one of them.

Her teacher is not using dd's full potential nor is she allowing dd to. That needs to be addressed. Also if a child feels uncomfortable w/speech being done in the classroom than its counterproductive & nothing gets accomplished. Thats what I would like to address.

If that is what you want, then have a meeting to have it changed.

Ok I'm a little confused. They have spelling ability groups? So you want Nik to be moved up from the ability group she is into another group? This is a seperate issue from the speech right?

Speech teacher coming into the room, I much perfer this type of intervention than having the child pulled out of the classroom, which is even much more obvious and call much more attention to who is getting extra help. Our speech teacher when she comes into the classrooms works with groups a children on whatever assignment they are doing at the time. I'm not sure what you can do about the writing issue.

I don't know what PAS is? Is it a language disability? That doesn't seem to match with high vocab & spelling so it's possibily confusing to the regular ed teacher?

Did you ask Nik about what she was upset about with the speech teacher maybe that will help clarify what is going on.

Its FAS Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She shows no signs of it, as in her straight A report card all yr. last yr.

I think the first step would be to set up a conference with the speech teacher. She should not be telling Nik what to write, though that may be Nik persception and not what is actually happening. If you don't like how Nik is receiving her speech help then you need to get it fixed in her IEP and you do have the right to call a meeting to address it. If that is how Nik feels then you need to help her find the words to tell her so that it can get fixed.

If she is doing so well why don't you have her exited from sped?

The spelling thing is a totally seperate issue and one you need to address with the teacher.

Speech being done in the classroom isn't in her IEP its something new the school wanted to try. Thanks, I hadn't thought about that not being done that way in her IEP.
I know Nik can over dramatize things at times like most girls her age but I was there yesterday & saw her face. When the class left the room to get pics takin I went to her desk & read her report & wondered why things were changed in another handwriting.

The spelling has been an issue since the beginning of the yr. & we all gave in to the teacher including the P. We were wrong because she obviously never had any intentions of changing her. The teacher NEVER goes over the spelling homework, I got angry w/Nik for being a bit sloppy one night & her answer was the teacher never sees it or goes over it. Yesterday I watched her go over the homework w/the higher group & I asked Nik about it. I thought Nik was over dramitizing but Nik's answer was the teacher doesn't do the other group cause she runs out of time. I know she never goes over it because Nik will highlight something she may have done wrong & I haven't seen anything highlighted in weeks & asked about it & Nik told me a few weeks ago the teacher never goes over it.

I helped Nik do predicates one night about a month ago & I'm still not sure we did it all right because it never got looked at. I would like to know for myself if what I thought was right. lol

Dh is writing a note requesting a conference today. Also dd's teacher asked me if I could go in to help her everyday for 2 hrs. because she needs help while doing language arts. I told her I couldn't do that. I don't know about you but any teacher who needs that much help w/5th graders has a problem. She only has 11 class for language arts, some of the kids go to gifted & the some go to special ed which leaves her w/11. No teacher should need a parent handling 11 kids.
