OK. I know this is for 10- 14 -
but I have one 9 3/4.

I was trying to encourage my kids to GIVE toys - b/c our local FOSTER KID Assn has virtually NOTHING - on their toy shelves.

She asked me - SO, Foster Kids don't get gifts from Santa??

I said - well- very quickly - that I 'spected it was the foster PARENTS that could not give them things -

WHAT ELSE COULD I SAY??

She was all for gathering stuff to give to them- but you guys, having a little bit of a leap ahead -----WHAT should I say specifically to this one???

That's funny.

At our house we all "believe."

I think learning the truth about the "Santa Lie," as my now-12-year-old ds calls it, can actually be sort of traumatic for a kid. My younger brother still recalls in vivid detail the conversation we had when I spoiled Santa for him when he was about 8... I don't remember doing it at all, but it has stuck with him forever!

I remember my friend in 3rd grade telling me she found her Santa gifts under her parents' bed. At the time, I refused to believe it. But deep inside, I knew; I just needed to come to terms with it on my own time, and by the next year I was ready to let go.

Your daughter is probably starting to do that now; that's why the questioning about the Foster kids, etc. It's probably a totally healthy and good way to start to let go of the fantasy.

Whatever you do -- don't let her truly believe all the way up until she is 12... My friend's otherwise sophisticated daughter was at a sleepover party in 7th grade when she talked about Santa and was openly ridiculed for still believing -- talk about a traumatic way to find out the truth!!!! So even with my almost-8-year-old, I'm already trying to not be QUITE so careful to cover all my tracks. He still believes with all his heart, though! :)

My just-now 12 yo asked me today & yesterday, "Tell me the truth - is he real?" ------
I keep saying "He is the Spirit of Christmas!!!....He will live forever."

She keeps responding - "Ya know, people don't live forever?"

Yet I know their Chorus Teacher, a single guy - of about 30yo, keeps telling them all that NO he is not real - DON"T THINK HE OUGHTA DO THAT _ BUT I"M NOT PUSHING IT!!!!!

I think there's a little part of her realllllllyy wanting to believe still -but I know she knows the truth.

She's pretty sentimental!!!!!! - I think that's what is the reasoning!!!!!
