I have no problem with schools charging for consumable products or items that are optional for students.

Firstly I would say that every state and every distict is different and while yes everyone is entitled to free public education, there are some fees that are legal to charge, but it will vary depending on your state laws.

I don't feel that it's right to nickel and dime parents.

>>>but I giggle at that term b/c they hit you up with hundreds of dollars in "hidden" extra fees<<

tis true...as when we lived in CA, I had to pay for my kids to take the bus. Here, I don't have to. Also their agendas (which are used as hall passes also) were given to them. The schools are also nicer and bigger here. Back in CA, not so much. The schools are not as crowded and they have tons of technology so I do see where the money is going. Also my kids went on TONS of field trips last year. In CA, if the PTO didn't provide funds for the trip (buses) then the kids didn't have them.

I do not participate in fundraisers either. We donate one lump sum to the PTO and that is that. We did that in CA and we just carried that over to IL. I can't stand it. With 3 kids? I don't have time for those shenanigans. No thank You!!

We are in Pa and our fees are more hidden. They never come out and call it a fee. When they send home the grocery list of supplies it says recommended. However,if you don't buy 90% of the stuff on the list your kid is sunk.Like you said why in the heck would a 5th grader need a jump drive. At that age you should not need a computer to do school work.My dd is in 7th grade and in 6th grade over 1/2 of her home work assigments had t be typed.I would live in fear of running out of ink at times. In isn't cheap,as you know and we are contstantly buying it for school projects. That is the reason we have the jump drive ,because if yu do run out of ink the teacher has to accept the jump drive,or the e-mail assigment. Then after paying close to $100 on supplies from the list the school supplied. You have your kid go to class on the first day and the teacher ells them some stuff on the list was wrong????.For example the science list said any sized binder up to 2 inche. We got 1 1/2 inch one, just so it sould fit in back packs and lockers then he is telling them to buy a 2 inch one,not going to happen. Then he said he wanted loose leaf,on the 1st day he tells them he wants a spiral note book, that really isn't a big deal, but if you did not go nout and buy it for the next day he took 5 points off your kids grade, that is not right, not everyone is going to rush off to the store immediatly after already spending $$$$.I di,it wasn't the money it was the point. In a way it might be easier to accept a straight fee,the applied fees are annoying.I don't mind buying the supplies. It is also fine to pay for stuff like instuments and sports fees,as long as the sports teams aren't getting afree ride and the kids in band a chorus are not.I do have to but Gab a tee shirt for show choir,Again in our school not require, but it is requred for field trips and going on field trips is part of your grade(see hidden fee sinnce it really is required or you will get a lower grade)Then Gabby has the endless projects,so I am contantly buying poster board, glitter, beads scrap booking stuff,so the project looks just so,Gabby does have a friend whose mom refuses to contaqntly g to the craft store for theses projects,to me its just easier to buy the stuff.Gab has a certain vision for the project and if it isn't just so she is in tears. We do not pay books or a registration fee though>What is up with a registration fee in public schools?you are required to go to school,by law,why are you payinging to register your kid in a public school, that he has to attend and if he doesn't you can go to jail?Of curse I expect to pay for a yearbook and an insrument, but if I had to pay to sign up my child for each grade I would be annoyed.
