$85 for the dress is for high school. We own the violin, she's been playing since 4th grade, so I didn't want to rent for that long.
Oh, and $93 for a math calculator for high school!
I donate to the parent's club instead.
I also hate the tissue and hand sanitizer requests. Haven't seen any requests for those yet this year, so I'm not going to do it.
As far as public school fees go, if a parent can't afford fees, they shouldn't be forced to pay them. Are our schools in Ca. really that poor?? I guess so!
I still can't get over the $60 request for wood shop. The teacher says most of his supplies were stolen last year, so how about the school using the parent club funds for his class?
I need to look into that.
I just can't wait to see how much the orchestra trips will be...they have fundraising requirements for that...ugh.
California is not poor they are CHEAP! They spend money on the stuff that is important to them and education is not one them. The powers that be are rich and they send their children to private schools, so they
I need to ask a question that may change my answer.
Are these kids being denied an education if they don't pay the instructional fee?
If so, we do have the fee, but no one is denied an education (or even a planner, which is a part of the fee). We just keep asking for it all year, and they won't be able to do any extras like clubs, sports, etc.
And I saw a couple more comments about Kleenex. And I just wanted to play devil's advocate and ask, "Would you really want your child in a classroom with 30 other kids...and possibly 180 different kids throughout the day..without Kleenex in the classroom?" Even if you provide your own child with Kleenex, do you think everyone will?
Many schools are not allowed to use funds to purchase Kleenex for the classroom. This is why even when a school just lets you pay for supplies, you still have to supply Kleenex. Most teachers will NOT pay for Kleenex with their own money! (I had to 2 years ago, and would do it again if I don't get enough this year, but most will not.)
Ramona Mom to 2 great kids and wife to one wonderful hubby since 1990!
I just bought my first (and for pretty cheap, too...$8 for 2 gb?) and I love it!
Our schools are NOT technologically-advanced enough for the need for any kind of disk/drive.

I don't mind paying for Kleenex at all or for that matter Purell. The school provides everything here but the Kleenex is like sandpaper & when they run out it doesn't seem to get replaced. I would gladly contribute Kleenex or Purell. In the past I have sent in both plus packages of pencils & notebook paper. I don't expect my dd's teacher to supply things out of her/his paycheck.
As for a fee for other things I don't mind at all because I would rather the school kept the extras in then drop them for lack of funds.

I actually have no problem supplying
>>>Copy paper I am a little perplexed about sometimes, I would like to know what it's used for, if its used to make copies of worksheets and handouts for my DD then I think that's stuff that should be coming out of the normal budget the school get for the year.>>>
We had a HUGE issue with this my last year in CA. The school wanted the PTO to pay for copy paper AND toner for the copier. That I do not understand and I will never understand. If we hadn't moved my kids would have been in private school because I swear if CA could take the desks away to save a dollar they would. Mind you, this was not a low income area. The median income was $90,000 a year and the majority of the families were well to do. But in the state of CA, it doesn't matter. All public schools are created equal.
