School web sites

I keep reading posts about kids that deny that they have any homework. Schools are now using free web sites (freewebs, and schoolnotes) to inform parents as to homework and other happenings at school. I check my daughter's team web site at least weekly (the entire week's homework is listed). Do your schools use these web sites?

Our school has a school website and a lot of the teachers have individual sites through that that they will post homework assignments, class projects, and the like on. Not all of DD's teachers have one, but it is nice when they do. We have never had a problem with her not doing homework or saying she doesn't have any, but there have been times I will check it just to see. Two of her teachers have the lesson plan and homework on it for the whole month in advance which is nice for us for planning purposes if I know she might miss for a gymnastics competition or something.

Nope, our school doesn't do that.

Yep our school has a program like this and we use it all of the time!

Ours is Family Access, we can get online adn find out what they have in their lunch account, what they ate for lunch, what missing assignments they have, what their grades are and so on!

THis is actually how we found out that DD's math grade wasn't so great!

I think it is a great tool for parents, but also I think sometimes it is a little bit of a violation of privacy and also I think it again, is making our kids so relient on other things--they don't have to tell us if they are having issues in a class, we can get on the computer, find out and take steps!

It is a great tool, but also has some cons in my opinion!

Our system doesn't give us information on grades or the lunch account. I wish it did.

I am sure many will disagree with me, but I don't think kids are entitled to that much privacy. I think it is my responsibilty to know what is going on at school, and the web sites are a tool to help that happen.

Aly's school is in the process of ALL teachers doing it.

Her teacher last year (another first year teacher like I was) used the Scholastic website, so I did, too--for 7th grade math. Only a few parents went to it, but when I forgot to post the homework before Monday morning, you'd better believe that I heard about it...lol.

I use the same site this year for 6th grade study skills and I have many parents and even more students that check it often. I don't have much homework EVER (unlike for math when you have homework EVERY night), but they use it for other things--like the calendar, any projects or study guides I have posted, etc.

Nope, not here. Our school has a very generic website which any member of the public can find through our school board website. I have no idea when it was last updates, but its basically just pictures of the school. The issue was raised at the last parent council and the principal said the problem is having someone responsible for updating it. Not all teachers have computers in their classrooms so they would have to do updates at some other time of the day on a common computer. Not very practical. The suggestion was to have highschool students who need a certain number of volunteer hours work on the website and keep it current, but there is no facility for a confidential sign-in where you can see grades or assignments.

I wish there was, just for my curiousity. Kristen has never lied about homework and gets very stressed if she forgets it or doesn't have it done.

I think what I mean--and I am not sure if I can put it into words, but let me try.....

I feel in our society, there are so many "computer" type tools, as parents we have to be in total control of our kids lives!

Our schools are catching on to this as well. Kiana's teacher has been getting better about updating her site.
