I'm curious as to how many of you have put TV's (DVD player, VCR, Game systems) in your kid's rooms, and what your rules are surrounding them?
Both my kids Nic (10), and Alyssa (5) (and my Stepdaughter Jamie on the weekends - she's 9), have TV's in their rooms. Nic has a PS2/DVD player, and Alyssa has a VCR. They both pretty much fall asleep to TV every night. How do you all feel about that? Could this be affecting their sleep at all? I haven't noticed anything negative, but my MIL has said that it isn't a very good idea.
Thoughts?

Oh for sure, what a waste of power. Awesome rule. I want that rule in my house.

Nope neither of my kids have a TV in their room. My older one Rachel (10 yo) does have a computer in her room but when my younger one gets older we'll probably get her a desk & 'puter also. Neither has a computer game system (Ninetendo/PS2/Cube/X-box)period; we don't own one yet but my nephew has 3. Boys seem to be more into the video games -- besides my girls play sports & we're always at practices & games so not much time for TV watching. (Another reason we don't get cable)

AH...that's where parental controls come it. Nicholas can access all channels until 7pm, and then only YTV until 11:00pm (YTV is a kid's channel). Alyssa can only change a channel with my password.
I don't agree with LOTS of gaming and TV either. The kids each get 15 mins computer time everyday totally monitored by me (I have passwords on everything). But the PS2 I don't mind, as long as the games are rated for little kids.
Thanks for your input!

Nicole we do the samething.
Hello and welcome to the board Sarah. Good to have you here with us.
My 12 yr old DD has a Gamecube. It is in the family room. She doesn't have a TV in her room either. Although she does have a computer. She has to turn it off when she goes to bed. She plays that sims2 game for hour on end when she has the time. I keep her busy so no time for that.
The computer is in the office area which is high traffic. There is just too much junk on the internet that kids could see, especially if they had access in a private area of the home.
Rasheita...same with us. The TV goes off at a certain time during the week but is pretty unlimited on the weekends.
So far, we've had no problems. The kids are pretty busy during the week and with games and such on the weekend
I agree about the internet. Our computer is in my bedroom. And i monitor the kids well. I wouldn't be able to stand not knowing what they were doing online....and for now, considering my eldest is only 10, I'm still smarter than they are when it comes to internet...LOL
