Spinoff of PG13, what TV shows?

Since the PG13 discussion has been helpful, I was wondering about TV shows. Katlynn likes to watch Ugly Betty with me...which I finally decided would be ok, I still am not sure about Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, since the content is so adult, everyone sleeping with everyone else, etc. CSI, I think is pretty gorey. Just trying to find a barometer, since I was so sheltered. My kids mostly watch the shows on Nick, Cartoon Network, Disney etc. They love reality shows like Survivor and Amazing Race and we watch a lot of TLC shows and Food Network, Animal Planet, Discovery etc. But as for Network TV, what do you all think is appropriate?

Thanks in advance. I find all of this so interesting and helpful. My mom passed away in February from Pancreatic Cancer, she was 55, and I'm and only child and I have the oldest children of all my friends, so I have to ask others for advice. :-) Thanks for humoring me!

Kristen has no interest in any adult shows except the Game Show Network and Food. Otherwise she sticks pretty much to Family channel. I watch Law and Order and CSI and sometimes she is in the same room on the computer while I'm watching a show, but she doesn't sit and watch it. So she hears stuff but isn't really paying attention or concentrating on it. I find CSI a bit gorey at times as well and would likely feel uncomfortable with her sitting there focussed on it. But as background noise I don't worry.

I had a roommate who's 9 year old DD used to watch Friends with her faithfully. One time my DD was not home and they were watching it and they were having a baby shower and this penis cake arrived and they were making all these jokes and I thought "Wow, this is totally not appropriate for a kid in Grade 4." and I'd have not allowed my Dd to watch. But hey, not my kid.

Hannah and I watch Ugly Betty - what does aly think about the brother that's now a girl? What's his/her name? and Wilhemina (sp) and her seductions?

We are not a TV watching family, so it's just not really something on my kids radar I think. They watch absolutely no network TV at this point.

I don't think MTV plays much "music" at all. Hannah has discovered "My sweet 16" on MTV and I let her watch that, but she's not interested in anything else. In the morning on VH1 there are videos that she sometimes watches.

Going to be unpopular I know but we don't find much on television appropriate for our own viewing, much less our son's. No one in my house watches much tv. Maybe an hour per week? Two at the most if we rent a dvd or stumble across a movie we wish to watch.

We find that most television today to be morally offensive, especially the reality tv shows and shows like Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives etc. It's definatly not something we want to waste our precious family/couple time viewing. In fact we usually don't want to wast our family/couples time viewing television at all. With tv you are engaged with the screen and the story on it, not so much with each other. We prefer more interaction with our time. Board games, cards, cribbage, chess, taking walks etc..

We also don't allow much in the way of cartoons. Mostly we watch documentaries or a concert. Occasionally a movie if it's not morally offensive, and we'll sit and watch a ball game from time to time (but are more likely to listen to a game on the radio than sit in front of a television screen to watch it). All tv time in our home is family viewing only. No one just sits and watches tv by themselves.

Sorry I can't be of much help to you.

The only reason we even have a television set is for the occasional dvd rental.

My 13 year old Ds watches: Sportscenter, anything basketball, Cardinal baseball, Walker Texas Ranger, and occasionally Drake and Josh with his brother. He isn't a big t.v. watcher unless it involves sports normally. He will sometimes watch Fresh Prince too.

My 10 year old Ds loves t.v. and watches mostly Nick and Nick-at-Night (Spongebob, Fresh Prince, Cosby's, Drake and Josh). He also likes Sportscenter, Cardinal baseball and Walker.

We always have sports on the t.v. when Dh is home-baseball games, NBA, etc. I like to watch General Hospital, Desperate Housewives, and Grey's Anatomy. My kids have no interest in those shows so barely pay attention to them.

We just started watching Shaq's Big challenge last night and all enjoyed that and will continue to watch it together. We also like to watch shows like Little People Big World, Wife Swap, Super Nanny (sometimes) and AMerican Idol together.
