Student exchange anyone?

DD is in ninth grade and doing very well in the enhanced program. She has been running around the house speaking French non stop and quite frankly it is driving me crazy. On Wednesday she brought home information regarding a student exchange program. Her teacher said she would be a good candidate and that she would get in if she applied. So now DD has it in her head that she would like to go to France next summer for the month of August. Her long term goal is to then travel somewhere else the following year and do a three month exchange in either Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany or Belguim.

DH and i have sent away for an application form but the thought of her going to France for a month three months prior to her fifteenth birthday really freaks me out. Everyone says she is really mature, she has a good head on her shoulders yada yada yada but the fact of the matter is she would still only be 14.

Does anyone have any experience with student exchanges either with their child or if perhaps you went i would love to hear about it.

Thanks,

Kelly

It would be hard but I would allow it. On exchanges they live with a family so they are under their care and most of those families have kids who've gone on exchanges I think so they understand it from the parents side. One month would seem forever but you'll be amazed at her French progress and it will be a trip she'll never forget. So while I'd be nervous (I was nervous about one week sleepover camp this year LOL) I would allow it if she really wanted to. Let us know what you hear.

I think it would be hard, but what a great experience.
