Summer care for 6 graders +

My DD is not yet at this age, but I'm starting to think about it... DH and I both work full time, and during the school year and summer, both kids can go to 'Kids Network' - a before and after school program, as well as summer program. The kids enjoy it since many of their friends also go, and there are field trips every day in the summer. However, it's only available through 5th grade. Once DD is in 6th grade, I'm okay with her riding the bus to and from school and staying alone for a couple hours until we get home. However, I don't know what to do in the summer. I've looked into different summer camps, but they seem to run only 4-5 hours a day, so we can't get her there and pick her up throughout the day. I would like to find someone to come into our home to be with the kids from about 9am-4pm, and be able to take them to the pool, the mall, etc. but where do you find someone you can trust, that will show up every day? I'm not sure how other working parents deal with summer for kids this age. Any ideas?

I work the school calendar so I do not need to worry about this, but you may be able to find a college-bound student who is wiling to nanny for the summer.

Many camps have a Junior counselor program, our park distict has a camp for tweens and teens. They ride their bikes up to 20 miles and go do something, see a movie, bowl, fish, etc... Then they ride back to town and eat a lunch at the swimming pool, and go swimming until 3 pm when they are dismissed. I only work part time and my kids are 13 and 9. I have no problem with them being home together for a few hours, but don't care for it if dd is home without ds. So, when he goes away to sleep away camp, she goes to this teen camp. Oh, I forgot our Y has some adventure camps for that age, rock climbing, skateboarding, etc... They have some great camps for older kids. My dd is helping with vacation bible school while ds goes to it too!

I know that a lot of older kids in our area go to the Boys and Girls club and the Y.

This might sound scary or crazy to you, BUT I found a great nanny on Craig's List. Look for child care in your area. Meet the person in a public place for an interview. I haven't used this person much, because we don't need her a lot, my DH and I work opposite schedules so we can each care for the kids. She is great, and found her on the internet!

Or, you can post your own ad on Craig's List for care wanted.

Hi I'm Robin a new single mom with a new job.My DD Johanna is already fretting middle school even though she is going to a school for thr arts (remember "FAME"). She is old enough to babysit or be a mothers' helper but because we are being stalked by my ex I don't feel safe leaving her alone.(sorry for all the extra info but I am new here and wanted to update us) Our solutonwas to get her a scholorship to the local Repitory theater camp she will be in MULAN, and sped the rest of the summer doing "arts enrichment"at her new middle school so she won't fell lost or friendless the first week of school. She doesn't feel babysat or like she has to go to day care and I have piece of mind. Hope this helps Robin
