Well, The Eagle Just Landed - if you know what I mean - & my dd is almost 11.5.

We're already looking ahead to Summer -

When should girls start using tampons? and how do you go about explaining where it goes & how?

There is no specific time when a girl is ready, its whenever she is ready. The Care and Keeping of You book has some instructions for using them and most boxes contain good instructions. I would offer it to her as an option if it looks like she might have her period during a time she needs to go swimming. My DD just started last month but 4 weeks have come and gone with no sign of another. Most girls on here who have started are very erratic, sometimes 4-6 months after the first before another shows up. So I wouldn't panic about summer yet but I think you could let her read the book and let her know that you are putting some under the sink (you can buy slim ones) for her if she wants to try them. Then let her take the lead, just explain the instructions are in the box and in the book.

Good luck. Hope she's taking it in stride. Seemed to freak me out more than my DD. LOL

Well, when I was at Girl Scout Camp in middle school the counselor used a teddy bear to explain! HAHA!!! Only problem was that she didn't explain about removing the applicator so the girl being instructed had a very uncomfortable day!

I guess when they're old enough to want them is old enough to use them. I was raised by my grandparents and didn't even start until I was 15. She never batted an eye when, at age 13, I told her I didn't want pads when I ever did start and that I wanted tampons. They sat under the sink for two years! I guess they didn't hurt me! LOL!

So I hear there's some sort of Sports or Teen marketed tampon?

Yeah - when I first used them, I didn't understand I was supposed to put the applicator INTO me - I thought I was supposed to just touch it to the outside of my vagina & push/insert the tampon from there- so the tips of those pointy triangles were pricking me - on the outside of my vagina - OUCH!!!! Finally, thankfully, i figured it out very soon & 30 years later here, I still use them all the time!

If you dd really loves to swim or do sports, you may want to suggest using it. Many girls are intimidated by them. The Care and Keeping of You has good instructions.

I can't use the applicator ones. LOL I use O.B. which you just insert with a finger. I find that far easier although I read somewhere that its better to start young girls with the applicator.
