I agree with the airline. They only have so much time to board their passengers before a scheduled take off. Delays cost money, folks miss connecting flights etc.. I would not expect an airline to hold a flight and inconvience 100+ passengers just because my three year old is having a hard time.

We talked about this on another board. I tend to agree with the airline. One story I read said that they were already 15 min. late and I know on many flights that can mean the difference between missing a connnecting flight and having out of pocket expenses or missing an important work event. I'd be down right peeved if my trip was screwed up thanks to a screaming child. They said she started right after they got on the plane, they usually let people with little kids get on 20 min. before departure, so if they were waiting 15 min. after that gave them nearly 1/2 hour to get her calm. How much more time would they need? another 20-25 min? That's too long. I believe they also asked if she could sit on her mother's lap and were told no, for a reason, its dangerous.

So I think maybe it was handled a bit untactfully, but they did get their money back and I'll take those free tickets if they don't want them. Personally I would have been crawling under the seat if it was my kid and would have hauled her off the plane before they asked me. Or let my husband go home if he had to work and I'll come tomorrow. I think too often people expect everyone to accomodate them. Why should potentially 100+ people be put out to accomodate one child? And I tend to find the parents who say "My child is not like the ones on TV" are usually protesting a bit too much. Maybe she's not, but no parent is going to say "Yeah, my kid's a flaming brat and this behaviour is par for the course".

The article linked is fairly biased towards the parents stance.

I completely agree with the airlines on this one. She was three years old...Why couldn't mom and dad drag her into her seat, buckle her in between the two of them and physically restrain her in her seat while the plane took off?

If this had been anyone older, they would have been forcefully removed and probably had charges filed against them...basically this family has been rewarded with free tickets for allowing their child to behave this way.

Just another of many very disheartening stories in the news lately. All of them pointing out how uncompassionate and downright mean our country is becoming. I'm not sure what to say about this one, as I'm still reeling from yesterday's news about a woman in Kansas City who was having a miscarriage and trying to get to the hospital. She was stopped by police because she had a "fake" temporary license plate in the back window of the car. This woman may have been violating the law, but did not deserve to be held for 12 hours, denied medical attention and verbally abused by these two public "servants." Along the same line, this child was being unruly but it sounds like no one really tried to use appropriate child psychology to calm her. The further comments in the news story from people who obviously "don't like children" just floor me. Everyone was once a child. Compassion means learning from your own experiences so you can help others get through theirs. We just have to stop trying to treat children as if they should act like adults.

I agree with the airline--for reasons everyone else already stated, so I won't restate them.

I think the airline did what they had to do!

Yeah I know, that was the link I took off the Hot Debate board, but I too have read a few other excerpts that gave additional info that wasn't at all favorable to the mom & dad!
