1. What size portions of food to you put on your tween/teens plate? Do they normally go back for seconds? My son is 5'5 1/2" and 130 lbs. Eating is not a worry for him. He eats more than hubby. I do have them eat a few bites of veggies, but I usually make the ones I know they like. My dd at 10 is a peanut and a picky eater. I refuse to get into battles with her. I figure if she's hungry she'll eat. I don't want to be her food monitor. She's a gymnast and very active and already getting the idea of calories and fat, etc. I try to be as factual about nutrition as possible and tell her and her brother all the time if they stop eating when they're not hungry anymore they'll be fine. Any food is fine in moderation.
2. What are your meal rules--do you make them finish their meal, is it not a discussion, do you have to negotiate how many more bites? Do you make them eat veggies? I'm not a fan of cleaning your plate. They need to follow their own body clues. However, it is important that they eat veggies, and they accept the three bite rule on things they don't like and will eat a lot of what they do like.

Probably give the girls a slightly smaller serving than DH & I esp if its a new entree/recipe. If they like it then they are welcome to seconds if there are any left -- this isn't usually a problem since both of them are active in sports. We do try & provide info on wise food choices esp the fats & sweets as well as encouraging a variety of foods as they tend to stick w/foods they know they like. (Rach could eat peanut butter every day & be happy)

My 15 yr old would NEVER eat seconds so I used to give him a 'healthy' portion and if he didn't finish it was no big deal. Now he eats, waits until everyone is done and goes back to polish off pretty much whatever is left! Of course he's tall and extremely skinny and athletic so I encourage him to eat when he's hungry. My 13 yr old daughter is also very skinny but with her I have to make her eat dinner..she'd eat two bites then want to pig out on dessert instead. Her portions are probably a bit smaller than the adults, but she serves her own plate so she's self-regulating.

Since they serve their own plates I do tell them to eat what they take. I don't make them clean their plates but if they pile a huge amount of food I do expect them to make a dent in it. As for veges, my kids are pretty adventurous but my son draws the line at squash type veges. When I make them I tell him upfront if he does't want the vegge then he can make himself a salad..which he willingly will do!
